O. O. Hodson and wife left yesterday
for the east. Their first point is Mun
cie, Iudlana, from which place they
will radiate until the first week in
May when they will go to Chicago and
visit the World’s fair for a week or so
and then return home. This Is the
first party leaving the city for the fair.
From the talk we judge that nearly our
whole population will visit Chicago
during the summer.

The Total Taie«.
Th« School Meeting.
Thu amount of money to be raised
in Yamhill county for state and county
purposes is »138,131.02, based upon the
figures of the state bourd of equaliza
tion. The actual amount that will lie
collected will lie larger owing to the
fact that the excess indebtedness lias
beeu taken from the gross valuation as
turned over to the state board and will
not be taken from the gross value of
property for county purposes. The
seven mills of state tax will bo collected
ou this aniouut however. Uy what
right does the'eounty court levy the
state tax|upon an amount of money
that the state—does not levy upon?
What amount is the legal basis of *the
county levy? The tax rolh have not
been footed up since the raise of the
state board has lieen extended upon
them and it is simply Impoaslble to
know the exact figures upon which
the tax levy is based. The county
court did not know this and it seems
as if the levy was made ill the dark as
to the requirements of the county.
The thing was lumped oft' and there is
not and can not be u thorough under
standing of the matter until the tax
payers foot the bills for 1893 through
the next levy.
The amount the levy will raise for
county purposes is »68,632.70, for state
purposes »37,181.04 for school purposes
»26,557.89, for road purposes $10,623.15,
for the indigent soldier fund »106.25.
Owing to tlie excess indebtedness not
being taken out of the gross valuation
for the county levy the total collections
will amount to about $140,000, increas
ing all the above figures in proportion.
Last year the amount cel lee ted
amounted to about $97,000. What will
become of the county If the tax levy of
1893 increases as much over 1882 as the
levy of 1892 hasjneretised over the levy
of 1891. The tax collected would then
amount to $182,000. It is time for tlie
taxpayers to think; not u few of them
but all of them.

expenditures of tlie district. It was
just the report that the clerk should
have made at the first meeting and all
the squabble would- have been saved.
According to the report there Ls $1197.08

eral fund mid an indebtedness of $8494.79
This indebtedness consists of bonds

learned the law giving the directors
authority to bond the district as per the
