The new council elected met for the
purpose of organizingon the evening of
Dee. 5, 1892, all of the members being
present.
The council filled the vacancy caused
by the resignation of (.'ouncilmen Pal
mer by electing Henry Gee. Council

tion and Chas. Loux was elected to till
the vacancy.

Frank H. Bigelow, a brakeman in
the employ of the Southern Pacific
Railroad Company, met with an ac
cident Monday morning that cost him
his life. He has l>cen working on the
West Side for some time, and at Cor
nelius, In Washington county, he got
in between two freight cars and was
crushed to death.
No one saw Bigelow at the time of
the accident, A flying switch was be-
ing made and Bigelow was on one car
which was to lie coupled to another.
One of his companions saw him stand
ing with a coupling pin in his band
and also saw him reach for a railing
on the end of one of the cars. When
tlie cars came together the locomotive
stopped. No signal to “go ahead”
came from Bigelow, and an investiga
tion was made, resulting in his being
found on one side of the track in a hor.

conscious and lived only about five
minutes. It was apparent that in
attempting to grasp the car railing he
was knocked down, a wheel striking
him and throwing him to one side.
There was a long gasli on his abdomen
and his spinal column had bccu fractur
ed, which was the cause of his death.
A coroner’s jury was, impaneled, and
after hearing testimony, found that
the deceased came to his death through
an accident, and exonerated the com
pany from all blame.
The body was taken to Portland in
tlie afternoon where Bigelow lived at
389 Harrison street, and with him
resided his aged mother, wife and 6-
year-old lmy, for all of whom he pro
vided. He was quite popular with fel
low-workmen and stood high in tlie
estimation of tlie company, having at
one time occupied the position of yard
master at Albina.
