THE EDl'CATIONAL EXHIBIT. THE CITY FINANCES. $ 854 61 Yaniliill County Shoulil Re.tionil anil Show up Iler Greatness. To the school officers, friends of education: teacher.« and Columbus day with all its pleasant associations, it« patriotic and instruct ive exercises has come and gone, and we have lieen made to feel more fully the magnitude and grandeur of our beloved country than ever liefore, and our love and veneration for her, her flag, and her time honored institutions has lieen deepened and made stronger by our having participated in its cele bration, and 1 take this op|x>rtunity to thank the people of this county in behalf of the state executive com mittee, for tlie zealous manner in which they responded to its call. And now I come to you with another matter of public interest which will call for still further demonstration of patriotism though in a different form. You will remember that I stated in a former article, tliat our executive com mittee have determined that the educa tional interests of Oregon should be represented at the Worlds fair next year. Steps have already lieen taken in that direction and in all parts of the state much work is being prepared for exhibition. All tills matter must be collected, [tacked and shipped to Chi cago anil the transportation paid. Space has been secured, but it must be filled up to receive the exhibit, and a suitable person employed to take charge of and superintend it during the six months it will lie on exhibition, all this will lie expensive and tlie question is how are tlie necessary funds to defray this expense to lie raised? The state as you well know lias made no provision, therefore, tlie plan suggested by Hie ex ecutive committee as set forth in its circular letters No. 1 and 2, already dis tributed is as good as any we think, and now if all the teachers will take hold of this matter with their wonted zeal and appeal to the children and parents to contribute 5 cents for every child attending school, tlie teachersgiv- ng from 25 to 50 cents and collecting as much as possible from others, tlie requsite amount $8,000 or $9,000 will lie easily raised. Mr. Geo. E. Witbington, cashier of tlie First National bank of Portland has kindly consented to act as treasurer for us, and all tlie teachers of this county are hereby appointed receivers and will remit direct to him, and may also report the amount and names of children contributing to this office, that we may know just how much the schools of this county contribute to this fund. Yamhill has done well in tlie Colum bus day celebration and we have no fear hut that she will keep her record good iu more material matters. Con tributions however small are accepted as tlie little springs and rivulets flow ing intoone great channel, make the mighty river, so these smalleontributa- tions coming in from tlie many schools of our county and state, will when they have reached their destination, form a fund (hat will go far toward, if not quite liquidating the entire expense. Let us then take hold of this as one man, and set tlie nickles, dimes and dollars rolling down tlie valley until the members of our efficient committee shall feel tliat they are backed by a people whose heart and soul is in the work, wind be eneouraged to redouble their efforts to make our exhibit second to none in tlie nation. Collections may lie taken any time during tlie win ter but tlie sooner the better. The teachers of No. 1, Mr. J. T. Patterson is tlie first to report collection taken and receipts obtained. Who will be the next? I am in receipt of a letter from tlie State Supt. asking for the number of schools tliat took any part in tlie Columbus day celebration, will the teachers of such schools please re port to me as soon as possible. J. B. S tillwell Supt. THE judges and clerks , Interesting Paragraphs from our County The People Who Will Have Charge of the Exchanges. Exchanges. Election in Yamhill County. [Sheridan Sun. Graves, so we are informed will get about 800 bushels of fine Burbank patatoes from five acres of ground. This doesn’t look as though potatoes are a failure in Yamhiil county. There is now talk of electric light.« for Sheridan. Why not? The city of Sheridan is large enough to support a plant. We understand power can lie obtained from the mill, either steam or water, tints making the power cheap. Sheridan is a good town and has a splendid country to back it up.. Newberg Graphic Oct. 28 I It doesn’t seem to make much differ ence whether the exposition is open or not, there is a big passenger traffic over the narrow gauge all the same. Geo. Uncle Sant had better look a little after the gentlemen who are spending his surplus cash, and see that lie gets a little nearer what he pays for. William Everest, on noticing an ox team passing through town last Wed nesday, remarked that it reminded him of the early days in Oregon. About tlie year 1850 he gnd his father took two yoke of oxen one day and hauled a load of household goods from the Ab ernathy place below town, to one of tlie Hess places, a distance of four or five miles. The man paid them a Spanish doubloon wortli sixteen dollars, for tlie day’s work.
