The question of free trade is ab solutely irrevelant, and the persist ent claim made in certain quarters that all efforts to relieve the people from unjust and unnecessary taxa tion are schemes of so-called free traders is mischeivous and tar re moved from any consideration of the public good. These expressions are in entire accord with Mr. Cleveland’s letter of acceptance. They express the democratic principle and purpose. They were reflected in the Mills bill and in the separate bills removing or reducing taxes passed by the democratic house at the recent ses- sion of congress. Tariff reform is no more free trade than economy is a cessation of government. A NEW NOMINATING METHOD. The voters are vehemently solic ited at every gtflteral election to rush to the ¡tolls and save the peo ple from ruin. But if the nomina tions are bad, how little is the use of votes. The truth is that the vot- ing plays a secondary part in an election. lt is the nomination that turns the scale for good or evil, and the primary makes the nomination. If both parties should nominate good candidates, good men would hold office, whichever party won the election. There may indeed Ite elections in which great principles are at stake; but the occasions are rare in which the voter is obliged to choose between a good policy with a bad candidate and a bad policy with a good candidate. The practical politicians jeer at us for our simple folly. This is what one of them said the other day: ‘‘It’s great sport to see peo ple go to the polls in hordes and vote like cattle for the ticket we prepare. Reformers don’t begin at the right point.
