CROP-WEATHER BILLETIN’.
Grand Jury Report.
Meet, and riace. a Full County Ticket
in the Field.
For Week Ending Saturday, April 2. 1892
To the Honor»ble the Circuit Court
of Yamhill County, State of Oregon;
We, the grand jurors for the March
term of said court, have enquired into
into all the business brought before us
and have disposed of same to the best
of our ability. We have examined the
various county offices and find that all
are run in a neat and business like
manner. We find that the clerk’s of.
flee needs more case room for records,
and would recommend that metallic
cases be purchased. We also find that
the county surveyor needs a table of
suitable size for his work. We recom
mend that the floor in the east corridor
of the jail be repaired and that the jail
be lined with steel plates and that the
grating over the windows be replaced
with chilled steel. We recommend
that a competent man be employed to
examine and repair the roof of the court
house, as we find it in a leaking condi
tion.
Respectfully submitted,

Two Panthers Killed
Thursday last Jap Lady of near Sher
idan, brought to this city two panthers
that lie had killed tlie evening before.
The largest, a female, measured six feet
and four inches from tip to tip, and al
though very poor weighed 86 pounds.
The small one, a kitten, measured four
feet from tip to tip. They were pur
chased by Chas. Fleming and arc now
being mounted by Mrs. Unruh, of
this city. Tlie porkers of the residents
of the Mill Creek range of mountains
have been disappearing lately, and
Wednesday three belonging to Bill
Nuble were found dead and panther
signs were found near by. Jap Lady
and his dogs were sent for and arrived
late in the afternoon. It was nearly
dark when the dogs treed the animals
and when the party of hunters, consist
ing of Elmer Yocum, Bill Nuble, Tay
lor and Jap Lady arrived the old fe
male had deserted the kitten and de
parted for a tree further up the creek.
The kitten was shot by Jap and in a
few minutes the dogs had found the
old one. A well directed shot behind
the shoulder brought her down, She
fell in the creek and the dogs were up-
on her in an instant. She had life
enough to make it warm for them and
Jap jumped in the creek to help them
out. It was dark and he could net see,
and before he knew it she was in front
of him ready for a spring. Before she
could do so however, he picked up a
large rock from the creek bottom and
threw it at her. It struck her on the
side of tlie head, breaking her jaw and
stunning her so that she was easily dis
patched. Jap Lady claims to own the
best dogs in the mountains and during
the past two weeks has killed several
panther and one cougar, whose meas
urements we will not give because you
would think we were telling you a fish
yarn.

During October the rains were well
distributed and about the average
amount. During November and De
cember the rains were heavy and gen
eral throughout the state, there being
an absence of the usual amount of sun
shine. January, February and up to
March 20th the rains were light; suffi
cient, however, to keep the soil in good
condition. There was an absence of
any heavy snowfall, east of the Cas
cade mountains, while to the west there
were few days that tlie temperature
was below the freezing point; in east
ern Oregon there was au entire absence
of any severe cold weather, a tempera
ture of zero occurring but a few times
in the more elevated regions. There
was not the usual acreage of fall sown
wheat put in, owing to the heavy No
vember and December rainfall,but that
which was sown did remarkably well.
Plowing and seeding were pushed to
their utmost during January, February
and fore part of March, so that now’
the acreage of cereals is fully up to the
average, and it is all reported to be in
first class condition. A more favorable
winter tor the stock has seldom been
experienced. There is no loss reported,
the grass and feed were plentiful, and
the stock all came through the winter
in excellent condition. The growing
season of 1862 opens most favorbly for a
bountiful harvest, even surpassing the
wonderful yields and products of 1891.
It should,.however, be borne in mind
that the success of the cereal crop in
eastern and Southern Oregon especially
dependsjmore upon the distribution and
amount of rainfall in the months of
May and June and the temperature
conditions in those months, than the
conditions of the soil and prospects at
the present time.
