The leaven of the woman's club is ex
tending throughout the country. The
smaller cities havo followed the lead of
the larger ones, and now in towns and
villages the clnbbable instinct is devel
oping.
The increasing prominence given to
the work of her sex in the weekly news
paper and family journal makes it pos
sible for the woman who lives at the
crossroads to keep informed of her sis
ters’ doings all over the world, and as
she reads she thrills in unison with this
reaching out of her kind. She asks her
self, “If the native women of far off
India can have their Sorosis, why may
not tho village and hamlet women of
America have?”
The village club in starting will do
well to avoid being an outgrowth of any
one church society. Don’t go to pieces
in the beginning on the rock of sectari
anism. The church sociables and sew
ing societies havo their functions—tho
club, it will be found, has one quite dis
tinct from these. Nor is it necessary to
await the motion of tho one or two
known and accepted leaders which ev
ery community, small or great, holds.
Any woman can start a club any
where.
She has only to speak to a few of her
friends and neighbors, appoint a day

Take the fronts and with the deep color
outline large stemless daisies, arranged
so that each one’s petals touch some of
those on either side around the ellipse.
When these are dry place the paper
on a board and cut out thé opening with
a knife point, following the lines of the
petals where they lie next to the ovaL
Prepare two sheets of bristol board a
little smaller than the sheets of tinted
paper and glue one behind each piece
which contains the opening. A little
glue in each corner will be all that is
necessary. Lastly, glue the tinted backs
to the other side of the bristol board
and place all under a heavy weight to
becomo quite smooth. The next step is
to put gilt centers to all the daisies.
Finally purxh holes in each half of the
holder, one near the top, one near the
bottom, and fasten with narrow bine
satin ribbon.
Sho is one of the youngest of Ameri-
can writers, her first published article
appearing in 1888. It was called “Ten
nyson's Idyls: Their Souice and Signifi
cance.” This was followed by “Betty,”
a last century love story, in The Cosmo
politan for December, 1889, which was
also issued in book form. From time to
time other sketches and stories have ap
peared in different periodicals, Society
Women in Fiction, in the woman’s
number of The Cosmopolitan, being
from her pen. Modestly disclaiming
the title of poet, she has written verses
that are sweet and natural.
An ardent lover of outdoor life, her
summers are spent in the country towns
of Maryland, especially at the old fam
ily plantation on the Eastern Shore. She

BRIDE’S FAVORS.
A d English Custom That la Kapldly Ob-
taining in America.
The English custom of having white
favors at weddings is rapidly obtaining
here, and it interests one to know exactly
where and when the custom first came
about and what it means. With the
ancient northern nations a knot seems
to have been chosen as the symbol of
indissoluble love, and they were the
first to use the knot of ribbon as the
decoration for a wedding. The word
“truelove” does not mean true and love,
as is generally supposed, but it comes
from the Danish verb “Trulofa fidem
do;” that is, “I plight my troth.” This
seems to me a much prettier idea than
the merely commonplace one of a true
love knot. Nowadays tho ribbons are
invariably white, but in times gone by
many bright colors were used and each
color had a special significance. Very
often tho bridegroom wore liis knot of
ribbons on his hat for several weeks.
Ribbons in those days played a large
part in the bridal ceremony. It was the
duty of the bridesmaids to dress the
bride's bed with them, and many discus
sions were had as to which colors would
be in best taste or express the most. A
discussion between them makes them
decide not to have yellow ribbons, be
cause they are the emblems of jealousy;
