F. X. Matthieu still owns the land in
Marion county, between Butteville and
Aurora where’ the first crop of wheat
I grew that was ever raised in the North­
west. This piece of land illustrates the
richness of Oregon soil, for it has grown
seventy-five crops of wheat in seventy-
six years, and it still produces thirty-
five bushels to the acre. The wheat
grown on this land, if spread on the
! surface would occupy as great a depth
as the soil has been cultivated.
