THE TELEPHONE-REGISTER August 20, 1891. The county superintendent tells us the apjMrtionment of school money will be ready next week. It amounts to $ 2.20 per capita. Our readers have all seen those handy traveling bags of russet leather. They have always been rather expensive but you can now buy them of Kay & Todd all the way from $2.00 to $3.25, Rust is reported in some fields, late sown grain in low places suffering the most therefrom. The damage done is less in Jackson county than in most of the counties of Oregon. The citizens of Newberg are about to raise a purse for the purpose of prosecu ting G. M. McCullough, charged with having murdered an unknown man and afterwards burning the remains in a barn. There passed though John Day city Monday last seven teams loaded with immigrants, men, women and children who hailed from Nebraska and Kansas, and were bound for Portland, and points in Washington. H. B. Hubbell, of Camp creek, in the south end of the state, sent to Condon Thursday a specimen of very sparkling opal, which he has discovered on his place, and which mines arc certain to create some excitement. Mrs Fletcher has received a fine large photograph of the LaGrande base ball team with the compliments of Smith and Bray of McMinnville’s old team. The team is a solid lot of good looking young men. There has been a large tire in the mountains in the neighborhood of Bald mountain. The smoke by day and the flames by night were plainly seen from this city. Therein of Monday night put it out as it has not been noticed since. SCHOOL FUND APPORTIONED. A Large Increase in the Number of Chil* •dren of a School Age. NEWPORT NOTES. Even tiio aaddoat aocidout ii pretty «ttin I to be the moving cause of one or two more or less amusing incidents, and Ta<>4V night’a gasometer explosion wts *R IBs ception to the rule. The story is worth telling as illustrating what imagination can do. A prominent young Rochester physician had a call that night that promised to keep him out late and his wife sat up for Vim, getting more and more nervous qs the slow hours lagged by on leaden feet, after the manner of ladies so engaged. At midnight there came a step up the walk, up the side stoop, even to the office door. Mrs. Doctor thought she recognized It as her husband’s, and without any precau tionary “Who’s there?” or “Is that you?” threw the door wide open. There was a man there and he was not her husband. He was a big burly fejlow; his face bore what seemed to her a mur derous expression; his right hand wks raised and pointed toward her in wliai seemed to her a threatening attitude. “Murderer,” “revolver,” “shoot,” were the words that best represent the impression produced on her. She drew back to close the door, and that very Instant came the sharp sudden explosion a mile away. That was enough. The chain of suggestion was completed. Her imagination, directed by having heard gunshot wounds profession ally discussed, caused her to feel a sharp burning pain pierce her shoulder, and with a scream, “I’m shot! I’m shot!” she stag gered into the hall. The man, naturally, ran for dear life. Mrs. Doctor dropped into a c^air and screamed for help. Her brother *n io her assistance. With a last effort she raised herself from the chair, reeled toward him, and fell fainting in his arms, gasping out just before she lost consciousness: “Joe, he’s killed me. Break it gently to Tom.” It came near being a matter more serious than funny, for when the fainting spell was over it was no easy matter to convince the lady that she was unhurt and quiet her nerves. And now in one physician’s family the principal topic for wonderment is whether Mrs. Doctor's nervousness thwart ed a genuine burglarious attempt, of whether some Innocent visitor, seeking in stant relief for some suffering member of the family, is wondering why Dr.---- doesn’t exercise proper supervision over women he is treating for acute mania if he will keep them in his own dwelling.— Rochester Democrat and Chronicle. Dr. S. A. Young, while here, had Governor Pennoyer, accompanied by his private secretary, was among the several professional calls. POSTOFFICE HOURS.
