The coroner’s inquest should have been postponed until further facts or evidence could be brought to light. The coroner’s jury found as usual that the de ceased was dead, dead beyond a doubt, but they could not And evidence against any one. Hcott, or, as she was famili arly called in tliis city ‘ Auntie” Cook was a resident of tliis city for tlie past eight or nine years up to four months ago wlion alia married Wm. Scott of Wheatland. Hhe made her living by selling useful articles al>out the city. In 1879 ahe waa living with her former hus band, Cook, in Salem. He owned a res idence in that city and traded it off for a farm rear Eugene, and the family moved to it. One day In the year 1880, Mr. Cook disappeared nothing could be found or heard of him. The community insti- tr.ted a search for him but to no purpose. The house was searched and the commu nity became worked up to such an ex tent that Mrs. Cook was about to be ar rested for ills murder. It wss known that the family did not agree and that M rs. Cook was a woman who would have her own way, no matter bow she obtain ed it and this was about the only evi dence that could be procured against her. At tills time word was received from Cook who had quietly walked out of the house and had kept walking until he had arrived in California Irom which state he wrote to seme of his old friends, fits death occurred soon after and Mrs. Cook settled the estate, which amounted to about |150 in cash after all claims were paid, came to this city where she resided up to her marriage.
