Yamagati, Japan's minister of the interior, has returned to Philadelphia from Washington to consult Quaker City physicians. He has been in this country several months at the head of a commis sion investigating the progress and achievements of America. His illness has worried his companions a good deal, who seem to feel that a man who can manage the in terior of Japan ought to be able to take care of his own. Miss Wheeler, of Philadelphia, who is engaged to Count Pappenhein of Bavaria, is only eighteen years of age. Miss Wheeler is tall and fair. She will have a considerable fortune in her own right. Her father, the late Charles Wheeler, left a tortune estimated at $2,000,000. Count Pappenheim does not jiossess much cash, but owns large tract* of land of I more or less value in Bavaria. His family seat is a big, old-fashioned castle at Auf-1 mnbi, in the Bavarian highlands. The ! scenery surrounding it is fine, but cannot | be turned into cash. Says a Philadelphia newspaper: “The tall and lean man with a gray muchache who grabbed an old green bag, shook hands with Lawrence McCormick and then made a rush from the Bellevue to catch a train at the Board street station last evening was George Bates, the Sa moan commissioner, who, with William Walter Phelps and John A. Kasson, fixed up the troubles of that far-away island with Bismarck. Mr. Bates was the dem ocratic member of the commission.
