I'ermaueut Survey to Silverton Begun — The Season Has Been a Poor One—About
1.500.000 Cases Packed on the Coast.
It will be a Paying Scheme.
The Oregon rnclflc.
Tuesday we stated that work was to
proceed eattwartl on the O. P., with a
new impetr.s. It is now learned that it
is proposed to push grading and track
laying this winter to a point fifty-three
miles beyond Gatesville, ninety-two miles
beyond Albany. This will take the road
to the end of the eight miles on the sum
mit graded oy Hunt. The present situa
tion is about like this: The road is
graded, including Autonelle’a contract,
twenty-four miles beyond Gatesville,
which is thirty-nine miles east of Albany.
That leaves thirtr-one miles of grading
to be done to reach the Hunt grading on
the summit. Rails have been laid five
milesbeyond Gatesville. The programme
is to grade and lav rails the full forty
eight miles from the end of the track
this winter and to let new contracts in
the spring and continue right along to
Boise City. One thousand or more men
will lie wanted, as nearly as we can
learn. The Oregon Pacific may be slow
in getting started ; but it is getting along
all the same, and will in no great length
of time be a part of a great transcon
tinental line. The probability is that it
will reach Boise City ahead of the Chi
cago and Northwestern.— Pemorrai.
