Get in fighting trim and don the
armor, we want that Astoria road.
Why all this talk about the new
postage stamp? The old is good
enough for us.
McMinnville will surely have
waterworks before winter but will
as much enterprise be shown for
the Astoria railroad?
Good things come slow. The Mc
Minnville water plant must be aw
ful good. Adjectives cannot ex
press the degree of goodness.
The Princess Louise and the
Duke of Fife were married the other
day. The people of Great Britain
will now pay for the fifer literally.
McMinnville is the largest city
and has the best advantages of any
city on the west side. Will the
people let the Astoria road go by
us ?
________
Direct communications to the
sea in order to quickly transport
our immense wheat crop to deep
water is what McMinnville needs.
Do we want it? Yes.
Experiments at the Mare Island
navy yard have demonstrated that
Oregon yellow fir possesses as much
tensile strength as the best Eastern
white oak. It is then one of the
best ship building woods.
The people of this city are now
unanimous that waterworks arc
needed, and bad at that. Let us re
mind you of the time when you
were kicking at the T elephone -
R egister for advocating such an
idea.

The chief engineer of the tire de

fire wardens and by ordinance have
duties to perform during the month
of July. They hare not yet perform

The people of McMinnville in
tend to be on the safe side; they
are insuring their property since
the large fires on this coast, at rates
ranging from 4 to 10 per cent. How
these same people would kick at a
tax levy of 3 mills for better lire
protection. Better fire protection
in the shape of a water plant would
be the cheapest. But some people
cannot see it that way.
The slow going Canadians on
the north of us have demonstrated
their ability to rustle. They carry
a cargo of tea from Y okohama to
