Yes, and the vig or with which the Harrison administra tion is filling up the offices of the country with republicans will soon necessitate an assembling of congress to create a few more offices for the faithful and hungry- few who will be left out when the pres ent supply is exhausted. The Washington city post office after hunting everywhere for a place of resi dence, has about decided upon leasing the First Presbyterian church, which is quite far enough out of the lines of travel to secure the clerks immunity from the public. The church is situated on Four- and-a-lialf street, which has long been abandoned as a thoroughfare, being too far down town. In this church Mr. and Mrs. Cleveland worshipped and its pres ent pastor, Bev. Byron Sunderland, per formed their marriage ceremony at the White House. The late Schuyler Colfax, when he was vice-president belonged to the congregation. FALL OF THE BASTILE. Last Saturday occurred the celebration of the one hundredth anniversary of the fall of the Bastile, by the French citizens indifferent jiarts of the United States. Sunday, July, 14, was the anniversary day, however, and for the benefit of our readers we reproduce the following his tory ot that great castle, for such it was: This famous prison was originally the castle of Paris and was built by order of Charles V., between 1370 and 1383, by Hugo Aubriot, Prevot or Prevost ol Paris at the Port St. Antonie, as a defense against the English. Afterwards when it became to be used as a state-prison, it was provided, during the 16th and 17th centuries, with vast bulwarks and ditch es. On each of its longer sides the Bas tile hail four towers, of five stories each, over which there ran a gallery, which was armed with cannon. It was partly in these towers and partly in cellars un der the level of the ground, that the pris ons were situated. The unfortunate in mates of these nbodec were so effectually removed from the world without as to often be entirely foigotten, and in some cases it was impossible to discover cither their origin or the cause of their incar ceration. The Bastile was capable of containing 70 or 80 prisoners, a number frequently reached during the reigns of Louis XIV and Ixiuis XV. Though small compared to the numtier which an ordinary prison contains, these numbers were considerable, when we reflect that they rarely consisted of ]>ersons of the lower class, or such as were guilty of actual crimes, but of those who were sac rificed to i*olitical despotism, court in trigue, ecclesiastical tyranny, or had fal len victims to family quarrels—noble men, authors, savans, priests and pub lishers. On the 14tli day of July 1789, the for tress was surrounded by an armed mob, which the reactionary policy of the court hail driven into fury, and to Die numter of which every moment added. The garrison consisted 82 old soldiers and 32 Swiss. The negotiations which were entered into witli the governor le«l to no other result than the removal of the can non on the Faubourg St. Antonie, which by no means contented the exasperated mob. Some cut the chains of the first drawbridge, and a contest took place, in which one of the besieged and 150 of the people were killed, or severely wounded; but the arrival of a )>ortion of the troops which had already joined the ]>cople with four field pieces, turned the fortune of the conflict in favor of the besiegers. Delaunay, the governor, who had been prevented by one of his officers, when on the point ol blowing the fortress into the air, permitted the second drawbridge to be lowered and the people rushed in, kil ling tlie governor and several of his of fleers. The destruction of tho Bastile commenced on the following day, amid the thunder of cannon and the pealing of the Te Deum. This event, in itself, ap parently of no great moment, leading only to the release of three unknown prisoners, one of whom had been its tennant for thirty years, and four forgers, and which it is said only the 654 i>ersons whose names now appear on the column in the Place de la Bastile, took part, nevertheless finally broke the spirit of the court party, and changed tbe current of events in France. The report was telegraphed all over the country that Blaine had resigned; but the president and the secretary him self both deny it. Blaine says his health is good. The murder, reported from Coos coun ty, of a woman and her child, then bur ial by the cowardly assassin and the prep- i aration of a like reception for the hus band and father on his return home, is one of the most atrocious deeds in the annals of crime in this state. It will doubtless be said that the murderer was insane, but he was sane enough to know that he wanted his victims, who were tenants on Iris farm, to leave, which they refused to do until the ex;>rration of their lease. The proper treatment for insanity of this devilish sort is the halter, and the proper asylum for such a lunatic is the one to which he is so ready to consign others. A man who is determined to have his own way at all hazards, regard less of the rights of others, is liable to develop a rage which charitably disposeil people kindly denominate “temporary insanity”, when he is thwarted; but to excuse him in a murderous deed on this plea when brought before a judicial tri bunal is to encourage individual tyranny and bold a constant menace over society. —Oregonian. President Harrison did himself and his office little credit by becoming the figurehead of Brother Bowen’s powwow at Woodstock July 4th. He knows yery well that Brother Bowen’s Fourth of Julv exhibitions at Woodstock are invariably of a gross republican partisan character, and to such exhibitions ho should not lend his presence on the National holi day. Although, it is only fair to say, his own speech on the occasion was free from objectionable matter ami in excel lent form. A taste of the real quality of Brother Bowen’s Fourth of July show was given when Tom Reid, republi can congressman from tlie first district of Mr. Blaine’s state of Maine, followed President Harrison and poured forth his partisan venom for an hour on the sub ject of “The Victory”—the republican triumph in the late presidential election. President Harrison made a mistake in allowing himself to be thus used by that sharp Connecticut Yankee, Brother Bow en, and we have no doubt lie is commen dably ashamed of himself to-day.— Roch ester Union.
