Misquoted Lines
Emin Pasha.
It is a peculiar faculty of the
human memory to misquote pro-
verbs and poetry, and almost in-
variably place the credit where it
does not belong.
Nine men out of ten say that
"The Lord tempers the wind to the
shorn lamb” is from the Bible,
whereas Lawrence Stern is the au
thor. “Pouring oil upon the troubled
waters” is also ascribed to the sa
cred volume, whereas it is not
there; in fact, no one knows its
origin.
Again, we hear people sav: “The
proof of the pudding is in chewing
the string.” This is arrant non
sense, and the proverb says: “The
proof of the pudding is in the eating
thereof and not in chewing the
string.”
Nothing is more common than to
hear:
Emin Pasha is an Austrian by
birth. He was educated as a physi
cian and was one of Midhat’s ad
visers at Constantinople. When
the prime minister was dismissed
on the eve of the outbreak of the
last Russo-Turkish war. Emin took
refuge in Asia, and finally made
his way, by way of Suakim, with a
caravan, to Khartoum, where he
arrived in very reduced circum
stances. General Gordon made
him a storekeeper, and he served
some time at Lado. After 1877 he
became surgeon-in-chief on Gor
don’s staff, serving about four years.
He kept himself busy all this time
attending to his routine duties, ac
cumulating scientific collections,
writing elaborate papers for Euro
pean societies and undertaking del
icate missions to Uganda and Un-
yoro. He is an expert linguist,
Turkish, Arabic, German, French.
Italian and English being familiar
to him, as well as many of the
African dialects. When Gordon
became governor-general of the Sou
dan he sent Emin to rule over the
Equatorial provinces. In three
years’ time he drove out the slave-
traders from a populous region and
converted a deficiency of revenue
into a surplus. He conducted the
government on the lines marked
out by General Gordon, and was
equally modest, disinterested and
conscientious.
When the Madhi rebellion broke
out a govornor-general of another
stamp was at Khartoum. Emin's
warning from the remote south
fiassed unheeded and dssaslers fol-
owed, ending in Gordon’s hath.
Emin remained at his jk £^- jic -
glected and almost forgotten,
continuous narrative of Emin’s
hardships and adventures in all
these three years in the Equatorial
provinces has been received in
any quarter. It is known that he
had 4000 troops at the outset; that
he organized auxilliary forces of
native soldiers, that he was con
stantly engaged in warfare with
surrounding trilies; that his am
munition and me ley ran low. and
that in the face of many difficulties
he maintained his position and
governed the country well. The
last European who visited him l>e-
fore Stanley’s arrival last year was
Dr. Junker, who parted from him
at Wadelai on January 1, 1886.
Since then communications from
him have been irregular, the last
tidings have been brought to Cairo
by Mohammed Beravi, who rejsirt-
ed the victory of Emin over the der
vishes,
