McMinnville has several cases of smallpox, ami our only wonder is that they liavu’t cholera, yellow fever and a dozen other plagues mixed in with it. A town of 1,500 souls without any sewer age, w ith their wells and cesspools all on a level, is liable to be attacked with any Ciseaseat any time. We sympathize with the people of our old home, but at the same time brea'he a word of warn ing to them regarding the sanitary con dition of the town. Thu above item appeared in the As toria Transcript and is the average pub lication of the condition of this city which appears in the state press. The efforts of T he T elephone are all bent in one direction and that is toward the im provement of this naturally beautiful city whieli at present is in such a bad sanitary condition. Our efforts may seem peculiar and that severe measures are taken to bring about this much need ed reform, but we can see no other way. The people of this state are all cognisant of the existing facts and it is no detri ment to the town to publish the facts as they are without one iota of exageration. When such items as the above are a daily occurence in papers out side this town it is sure to follow that McMirn- ville will soon be looked upon as a sickly hole and people will shun it as they would death. When such items do ap pear, the press of this city cannot deny them, for we know it is true. Something must be done, as we have said before or McMinnville will go to tlie dogs. Al ready four or five cases of typhoid fever have appeared and in connection with the smallpox the city presents a pitiful spectacle. This reform must come and come soon if the city wishes to draw people to it. As at present if nothing is done the town will slowly but surely go down in the estimation of the people in the state. With good sewerage and wa ter works the sanitary condition of the town can be kept good, and there is no disguising the fact that this is the only thing which keeps It down, Some of the people in this citv think that because we have, with an effort on the part of the progressive element, secured a large tine school house all is done that is necessary to make this a city of 10,000, io the next few years. They are mis taken as they will find ii nothing is done : further in the line of improvements. | With a good system oi sewerage and j water the public health would be at least 50 per cent better arid a fire protec tion would at the same time be furnished which would save to the property own ers of this city at least $2000 a year. The people of this city must begin to think for themselves and argue this question and endeavor to do something or the results of this smallpox epidemic will be felt for years to come. We are now prepared to show the latest in Mens’, Youths’, Boys’, and Childrens’ suits and Overcoats for the Fall and Winter Season. Read the last poem of tbe poet laure- ate of masonry. W. D.
