The Portland hatters say that the Re publican hat is a pearl plug with pearl band and the Democratic hat is a pearl plug with a black band. This question should be settled as McMinnville people have the hats but do not know the band to use. We have added an engraving depart ment to this paper and in due time art icles on Yamhill county subjects will appear illustrated. This addition is not without an expenditure of time and money and we hope the public will at least appreciate our efforts for the ad- vancetnent of our glorious county. PORTLAND RACKS. From the New York Herald. The editor of the Pittsburg Leader has struck what he predicts will proves sen sation. He spreads it very thin over four columns of apace until it resembles * small piece of butter on a iarge piece •f bread. He has sent a correspondent id great expense all the wav to Utah, and made a discovery which enables him to take rank at a single leap with tlie world-re nowned C. Columbus. The discovery is that the popular and lovely lady of the White bouse is in some blind, indirect and faraway manner ret tied to Number Nineteen, Amelia, one of the wives of Biighaui Young, Well, if Brigham weio still alive we should feel tempted to send him our con gratulations bv telegraph. To the de scendents ol Number Nineteen, if any of them breatue the air of this weary and wicked world, we profess that we are profoundly envious of their cousin ship to the fair and gracious lady in question. The honor they enjoy is one which any American would proudly prize. But what shall be said of that mis- cbievious and designing partisanship which seeks to make political capital out of such a fact? Mr. Cleveland, iu a campaign like this is fair game. Ham mer him, make fun of him, scold, fret, fume at him, pulverize him if you can, but remember that Mrs. Cleveland is not running tor office, but is to strongly entrenched in the affections if the peo ple that the coward who handles het name lightly will have his ears nailed to a lamp post This is not a good year for gossip. Slleti Agency. THE Jo Ben Lane has been removed from the Siletz Agency and Mr. D. Gather, who lie's been Clerk there for two years, appointed in hia place. The Leader puts it as follows: "The removal of Mr. Lane was caused by the trouble in the spring by the Indians. A government surveyor ran away w ith a half-breed girl employed at the agency, and the Indians blamed the agent lor it. The trouble was fo mented by persons outside of the agency, under threats of personal harm by the Indians. The girl was sent to the school at Chemawa. Mr. Lane secured an in vestigation of tbe m-itter by a special agent of the government. The result of the investigation was a request for Mr. Lane's resignation. He went to Wash ington to vindicate himself, but with no effect.
