H. Adams has started a billiard par­
lor over 8. A. Manning’s store. He lias
purchased the tallies and fixtures form­
erly owned by Welch A Dee. A neat
orderly place will be kept.
Lyle Wright, Georgs Hemstock and
Charley Holman came down the river
Wednesday. They succeeded in killing
18 ducks. ’ There was one boat ahead of
them and four behind them.
The Indian war veterans will hold
their annual meeting in this city on Fri­
day, January 6. Every member should
attend as a first class time is sure to fol­
low the meeting of old comrades.
Geo, Owens shipped a full blooded
Berkshire pig to W. H. Small, of Cot­
tage Grove, Lune county, one day this
week. Mr Owens has very fine blood­
ed stock if this pig is a specimen.
It is requested by the proprietor of
this paper that all men owning hounds
who wish to contend for the champion­
ship of Yamhill county; will come to
this office and enter their dogs before
the 14tli of January.
On the evening of Dec. 31, a watch
meeting will be held in the Masonic par­
lors. Everybody is cordially invited to
attend. The ladies will have a nice oys­
ter supper prepared. The proceeds ot
which will go to the Masonic library
fund.
Queen Esther to be rendered on the
evening of January 10 ang 12,at Garrison
Opera house. The best local talent of
McMinnville has been engaged, also a
well organized ocliestra. Proceeds to be
expended for a bell for the Baptist
church.
A band of Chinese pheasants which
have been seen upon a farm near this
city have been killed by some unscrupu­
lous sportsman. There is a heavy fine
for killing these birds anil it will be en­
forced if this comes to the knowledge of
the authorities.
To-morrow the weighing of tho T ele ­
phone stove takes placo.
All those
wishing to subscribe to the paper can do
so until 3 o’clock in the afternoon when
the weighing takes place. Be sure and
come to S. A. Manning’s store and see

Will Logan returned from Dayton
Thursday where he has been working
for the well known drag firm of Peery A
Harris. He reports business done by
the firm as very large, having sold a
very large amount of Christmas goods.
The sale ot Christmas goods outside of
their regular trails amounted to an ex­
act $100 on Saturday last.
D ihtheria at A shland .—During the
past week, says the Ashland Tidings, a
number of new cases ef diphtheria have
appeared in town, anJ the people of
Ashland has faced the painful fact that
the disease is here in epidemic form.
The physicians report that since the first
of the week the disease seems to be con­
fined to the local centers of its existence
at that time. The great majority ot the
cases have been of such nature that the

sufficient to overcome.

San Francisco Examiner publishes the
statement that the Oregon development
company lias purchased in the east a
new first-class iron Grip to tako the
place of tho stranded Yaquina city,
which will as soon as possible be put on
their line between San Francisco and
Yaquina bay. From this it is evident
that the loss of tho Yaquina city will in
no wise cripple the business or traffic of
thejins.
The Coyote Chase.
Saturday morning people with dogs
began to arrive from every direction.
At 10 o’clock the honnift were all enter­
ed. The following are tho men who en­
tered hounds and the names of the dogs:
Am Shadden, Fiddler and Muse; Janies
FletcMer, Lead and Drum; G. Baxter,
Nit and Bams; J. Hendrick, Gunner;
John Berry, Frank and Clip; Fred D.
Sitton, Queen and Bals; John Hendrix,
Queen and Frank ; Win. Martin, Joe and
Queen. At 10 o’clock Charley Cook
started with tho covets and lead him,

them in a short time. This bitch is said
by all to be a very fine animal. At the
fair grounds a large number bad assem­
bled to see tho finish. Some time lapsed
before the hounds were heard, at last
Frank, the hound entered by John Hen­
drix, jumped through the gap, followed
by tire whole band and came tearing
down for the finish. The excitement
was iatense and people crossed and re­
crossed the track, which fooled the
hounds and in fact tho all left the trail
und Frank the Hendrix dog trotted by
the judges stand fits!, with Drum tire
Fletcher dog second. The race from the
gap to tho stand was a pretty one and
everyone was excited. This race was
decided a draw and the dog men con­
ented te another run within the fair
grounds to decide which was the beBt
dog. The coyote was accordingly lead
from the judges stand around the entire
grouud close to the fence ending at a
stand by the ditch. Tiro dogs were
turnod loose and a prettier start was
never looked upon. One dog would
lead and then another until on the home
stretch when Clip tho dog entered by
John Berry generally was in the lead.
When nearly at tire finish the trail was
lost and was found by Jas. Fletcher’s
dog Drum, who came in first with Lead
second. Both dogs were entered by
James L. Fletcher and tho two purses
