WEST SIDE TELEPHONE. The Official Democratic Paper. H. T.. HEATH. M c M innville , F riday Publisher, O ct . 28,1887. THE COUNTY JAIL BUILDING. If the county jail is so large, why was it, that Mrs. Marple the mother, of Marple was lioarded and confined in the city at Lafayette last winter for several months? The fact is, that there are only four cells in the county jail, and one of these is a dark cell, and there is no room in the building for more, It is true that you can put two or three men in a cell, but no sheriff has felt safe in doing so, and it was never so intended. Why lias Neil Westerfield been under pay from Yamhill county for seven months at$l .50 per day, to guard the jail and its prisoners, with a Winches ter rifle, if it is safe and such as the county needs? Why has Yamhill county paid out $1,000 on the building since it was built, if it was a good building when completed? Why has Yamhill county rented the entire upstairs of the building for only #3. a month to lawyers, if it is fit for any thing else? Why has the entire upper story costing at least #3,000 never been used for anything else except a lawyers office at a small rent? Why has there been so many escapes from the jail in the last five years, if it is safe? Why has Sheriff Harris now kept several guards about the building, and why was he advised to do so if the building is at all safe»? Will any one answer these ques tions? If not tax-payer will you go and seo for yourself or ask the county clerk if these statements are not true? over the county I find to my sur- On Tuesday the 8th oí Octolior, there prise McMinnville is the geograph- ¡»to be submitted to the people of this ‘ , , i la xl I county three stale amendments, upon leal center, and no one doubts the which ,. . every , legal , voter in this county ■ fact of its being the business center . |lttB a per|tsc| right to express his opinion and if I should seek higher educa- . upon, by his vote. The most absurd explanation of the scarcity of money which is al leged to exist in New York and other eastern centers, in that which ascribes it to the extent of railway building ojierations this year. The statement is made that not less than $240,000,0X1 has been “absorbed” by this branch of enterprise during the year, and that this has created the stringency in the money market the money invested in railway con struction goes into general circula tion at once, instead of being hoard ed up, and as a good share of it comes from abroad, it follows that railway building ought to have a tendency the very opposite of what it is charged with.—Industrial Ga zette, foster it, or the temperance question. If there are enough voters in this state who believe in the cause, ami that the cause is a grand one, it will carry. Both sides have able men advocating their cause. It is in fact a struggle for power. Tho judicial amendment is one, that an intellect only half developed, can see the advisability of votiugdown. All the intelligent voters of the county are strongly opposed to it as thev see, that should it pasE it gives a chance for mfre fraud and corruption in the adininistra- lion of tile state than should be used in a pure government. Both parties have people whose sole aim is political gain, and it the voters of the state can do away with this extra fraud and corrup tion which is sure to follow ; the making of this amendment a law ; it is their duty to do it. The changing of the state elec tion from June to November is not of material difference. As the elections are now hehl in June it places the state of Oregon before the people of the other states, more prominently than it would were the elections of all the states to take place at the same tints.
