At ■’the outbreak of the “gold fever” in 1849 he went to California and set tled at Nevada io that state. There Hio established tho “Nevada Journ- Al” and at the same time was intor- . ested in gold mining. His aspiring naturo led him to the study of law and he was admitted to the bar in 1854. In 1855 he was made Dis trict Attorney of Nevada county California and from that time devo ted much attention to political af fairs. In 185G ho was honored with the degrees M. A. bestowed by the college of California. In poli tics he was first a whig and upon tho disintegration of that party joined the republicans. In 1860 he was sent as a delignte to tho con vention that nominated Abraham Lincoln for the presidency and in 1861 was chosen to represent his district in the 37th congress. He soon attracted attention there and introduced a bill which led to the building of the Central Pacific rail road. Aftor tho expiration of bis term ho declined a reelection and dovoted himself to his law business. In 1869 and 1871 he was again sent to Congress and whilst serving his last term was elected to the United States Senate. In 1873 lie took his scat but resigned in 1874. In 1882 ho was mentioned as a proba ble Secretary of the Interior but was sent to represent the United Satets in Berlin, lie served acccpthbly until the controversy about the ex clusion of American products arose in Germany and in consequence of this resighed his commission. He returned to tho United States in the summer of 1884. He was ’ most prominently mentioned as successor to Senator Farley but he was not chosen. H. II. They returned afterward evincing a very amicable disquisi tion, and promised to supply the ex pedition with provisions. The}- in formed Stanley that there wero oth er rapids higher up, more difficult of navigation, and that further prog ress by the river would be impossi ble. A dispatch from upper Texas says a gentleman just in from the Upper Panhandle says that reports of loss of cattle by the Capital syn dicate have not in tho least been exaggerated. Tho company has thousands of more cattle than it has water to supply, and they arc dying by thousands. .One of the employes of the syndicate told this gentleman that losses for the pre vious twenty-two days would aver age 50 head per day. nearly bald for six years, during which time I used many hair preparations, but without success.
