The annual meeting of tho Christian
church is held in a beautiful grove near
the depot, and was this year largely at
tended. The houses were occupied by
families, an.l many tents were erected.
The weather was very fine, and the at
tendance on one Sunday was estimated
by some at about 3000. Tho order was
admirable, the sociability marked, and
the preaching and devotional exercises
both interesting and profitable. The
preachers present were: prof. Alex
Johnstone, Portland: J. W. Webb,
Salem ; D, T. Stanley, president of
Christian college and stato norma!
school, Monmouth; Prof. Bristow, state
agricultural college, Corvallis; D. M.
Doty, McMinnville ; I. N. Mulky and
Philip Mulky, Pleasant Hill; P. R. Bur
nett, Monmouth ; It. M. Messick, state
evangelist ; Elijah Richardson, Eastern
Oregon; J E Roberts, Aumsville; Peter
Shuck, Bute creek ; F Dillard Holman,
J A Sidoner, Elias Weddell, and others.
It was resolved to continue the annual
meetings at the same place, and $1CO
was raised towards building a perman
ent aibor and a house for the preachers’
headquarters. The preachers and offi
cers association was organized, and is to
meet at tlie annual co-operative meeting
to be held probably at Salem, instead of
Forest Grove, in the fall. There were
several converts immersed. The follow
ing report of the committee on temper
ance was presented:
Whereas, The manufacture and sale
of intoxicating beverages lead to the
dangerous habit of social drinking and
the deplorable increase of intemperance

pray for the prohibition oi the iniquitous
liquor traffic and seek by all honorable
means to secure the submission, ratifica
tion and enforcement of the pending
prohibitory amendment to the state con
stitution.
