Bauer, fomgi Pennsylvania, ia the flneat and most business-like pen man that has ever been in opr city. Hia pupils say’ he is so efficient, and his methods are so satisfactory that they are reluctant to have liim leave, and efforts lieve been made to retain'him; but en gagements made at Dayton make it im possible for him to otsy longer than this oue term. Prof. Bauer graduated in the Business university in Rochester, New- York, and also from the Pen Art hall and Business college in Obertin, Ohio. We most heartily commend to all Prof. Bauer as the most efficient instructor of pen manship and One drawing we have ever met. He will give you entire satisfac tion. We are free to confess that for gentlemanly conduct and earnestness in his efforts to instruct he is all that can be desired. Not only is he an expert pen man but also a fine crayon artist. We have had the pleasure of seeing a crayon portrait of Mr. E. Carpenter, of this place, by Prof. Bauer, which is pro nounced by competent judges to be a fine specimen of the art. Feb. 29, 18M. Robert Alexander and wife went to Portland Tuesday. Mr. Busbee and wife, of North Yam hill, were in town Bunday. Refreshments were served for the small stun of forty cents a couple. Say, don’t tell anybody that I told you that tha drygoods clerk on the comer of Third and Ferry streets would like to “ketch on” to the correspondent. He says that it is some man who stays around town and has not got anything else to do. Mine friend you vhas not quite smart enough to “ketch on.” _ The only good school that has been in Dayton since its commencement as a town has been during the past nine months. Prof. Hartson and Miss Ella Jones taught the first three months term, and during this term, under the ex perienced eye of the professor, it was noticed that two teachers could not do justice to 120 scholars, and during vaca tion through his influence school 1 w$ were printed, a partition was placed in the lower.room and a third teacher hired. The school is now. divided into three grades—gram mar, * intermed iate and primary, with l*rof. Hartson, Miss Minnie Call and Miss Ella Jones as teachers for the six month's term. Dur ing this term there will be many new branches of study introduced. Dayton can now boast of having the best school ii^ Yamhill county. B lack H awk . . J CARLTON. M. ie. UM. Ace in command, with Major George, Capt. Hudson and Lieut. John as officers. They first marched to the residence of W. E. Bodie armed with tin cans, shotguns, bells, horse-fiddles, etc., and after serenading them they were called in and right royally treated. From thence they went and serenaded Chief William where they received a hearty welcome. Chief says it was funny to see Major George trying to hit his tin can. You see the Major is rather ertt- pulent, he couldn't hold the can in front of him, so he had to carry it on his shoulder and get a cheap boy to hit the can for him. They left Chief Williaffi and serenaded others and were treated again, after which they adjourned tb their barracks wishing the newly married couple many years of wedded blisq, H awk -»] F ini .—The current number of the Writ Shore is* accompanied by a large, tinted supplement, showing the famous Shoehone falls, of Snake river, a cataract superior to Niagara in many respects, though car rying a&naUer volume of water.
