The Reporter takes us to task for
our remarks on the tax levy, and
says: “The county court reduced
the county tax one and six-tenths
mills, and as they had nothing to
do with the state tax it seems as if
some praise should be given in
stead ti censure.” We did not cen
sure the court, but simply Baid that
the levy should have been no more
for this year than last. The tax-
- payers were told by the McMinn-
' ville people (and certain members
of the court joined directly or in-
directy in circulating the report)
that in case the county seat should
be relocated no increase of taxes
would be necessary to erect new
buildings. A b a .public journal the
R egister considers it a duty to
work for the beBt interest of the
people. And we still contend that
the taxpayers had i-eason to expect
only such increase of the levy as
•was caused by the state tax. In
the meantime the errors found in
the assessment still keep rolling up
the deficiency, and it is altogether
probable that Yamhill county will
have to pay state tax on several
thousand dollars, on which it will
not be able to collect one dollar in
taxes on the assessment. The
principal cause of this is that the
same property has been assessed to
two parties.
We thank the Reporter for the
dwmpliment it pays the R esister
when it says we have better oppor
tunity for gettihg county news than
it has.
Michigan, 700 miles; Montana, 616
miles; Missouri, 554 miles; Ala
bama, 515 miles; and Indian terri
tory, 499 miles. It will thus be
seen that the greatest activity has
been in the west, northwest and
southwest. The Atchison, Topeka
and Santa Fe road laid 1,368 miles,
being more than any other. Accord
ing to the Railway Age the total
railroad mileage in the United
States is nearly 151,000 miles. The
railroads built last year involved an
outlay of about $300,000,000, which
was provided for almost entirely
by new bonds and stock issues. It
is not expected that the current
year will witness any approach to
the record of 1887; and some es
timates put the probable figures as
low as 6,000 miles.
