The front sides of the teeth a re com posed of a com paratively thin layer of very hard enam el backed by soft er dentine. As the teeth a re used the dentine w ears away fa ste r than the enamel, and as they continue to grow, they m aintain a sharp chis el edge tipped with the hard e n a m el. These are ideal instrum ents for chipping wood. They can fell trees which a re m ore than two feet in d iam eter. Although beavers are timid, peace-loving animals, says the A m erican Wildlife Institute, their teeth m ake formidable w eap ons in combat. When not taken by surprise, they have been known to defeat carnivorous anim als which ordinarily prey upon them. ---- IIV Y ir ig in in V a l e ---- OEOPLE in New York are A still talking about Charlie McCarthy’s first week there. In fact, a new aristocracy sprung into being; its mem bers were the people who had actually gone to the first broadcast ( ti ckets were scarcer than hen’s teeth), and they are still high-hatting their friends who couldn't get in, and running perfectly good luncheons and dinner parties by insisting on telling about how cute Charlie is. "You simply have to see him to appreciate h im ." they declare C harlie's kidnaping, one evening, by the am usem e nt editor of one ol the new spapers, very nearly stirred up a lot of trouble. The famous little m an Is Insured for $2,.S00 Bergen was so worried that after C harlie's re a p p ea ran c e he took to taking Charlie a p a rt and hiding him in sections. -----*---- Ann Sheridan has sort of crept into stardom by the back door, nl though she deserves the promotion It’s "N aughty but Nice” that stars her, and studio politics are Involved. HO U STO N ClOl’D ISS GENERATION ago, homemakers approached the prob lem of feeding their families with but two objectives: to put weight on their children and to send adults away from the table with their appetites appeased. If the child failed to gain satisfactorily, or if his teeth were crowded and sub ject to decay, he was said to “take after his Uncle Abner” or perhaps to have inherited the poor teeth of his maternal factors that science has d e t e r grandmother.
