Commonwealths are now saddled with financial debt and burdensome taxes f iltration plants and incinerators are expensive and would have to be met by the publii purse. However, for those who look only on the financial side, vco will not mention here the danger to life and health if we let our streams flow on polluted .is they are. Now that Bonneville has definitely proved to be no obstacle in the upstream migration of salmon, the next great est hazard of the salmon industry is stream pollution. That can be remedied if enough persons vote 318 X Yes. • • Senator Edward R Burke of Nebraska. Portland visitor, is of that group of Demo cratic members of the upper house who are not afraid to stand up and be counted when they think the president is wrong. 'Phis is the group that will be more numer ous in the next session, when the backs of some others will be stiffened bv the failure of the senatorial primary purges in Iowa, Georgia. South Carolina and Maryland. Senator Burke still is a strong advocate of President Roosevelt. I he fact that he did not go along w ith him on the supreme court issue, for example, does not read him out of the party. Quite the contrary. As t h e political weuthervane now indicates, the Democratic senators who are unafraid, who can be led but who will not be driven, constitute the ultimate control of the Democratic party. And thev do not differ with the president on the aims of his humanitarian program. Such i one is Burke of Nebraska Oregon Journal.
