The question of ancestry is a matter of
more or less interest. W e are here, but we
are here because others have been “here
before us. W h o these forbears were in the
ancient times we are left to conjecture. Some
have advanced the theory that in the dim long
ago we have had a rather close relationship
to the hairy, tajl-bearing Simian. T hat is dis
concerting to some and personally we rather
scout the idea. However, occasionally we run
across a specimen of the race, and a certain
similitude stares us in the face, and we must
gravely assume that the scientist surely has
some evidence for his theory.
If a man shed his shirt and throw away his
razor, there is no question that in a few short
generations he would be as hairy as any
Simian. There is of course the tail! W h a t
ever else we may have gained, ew have lost
that. It s some loss, too. Think how useful
a fifth member would be in this present com
plex life. T here’s the bus driver. He has
three or four pedals his feet must repose on;
about the same number for his hands; the
gag ets'on his bus board to finger; the air
lever to work that opens and closes the doors.
Ask him if he could use a fifth member. Then
there is the pipe organist with three decks of
keys to handle and a bunch of stops more pro
fuse than even the governor’s vocabulary.
Moreover, there is the apple picker. How
more efficient would be the apple picker with
a good strong extra tentacle by which he
could hang. The more you think of it the
more you realize that the loss of that fifth
member is some loss!
Perhaps our pride is shocked at the thought
of Simian ancestorship. But maybe we need
to be shocked— shocked into humility and
usefulness. The pride of the sneer-covered
lip has never proved an asset of this world.
Humility gets the world s work done. Look
at the mule!
Proverbially, he is without
pride of ancestry or hope of posterity, but
he has plugged right along with us in the ad
vance of civilization. He has had what it
takes. So we close with the double conclusion
that ancestry involves not all the apples on the
tree, and perhaps in descending from the an
cestral tree one may lose something that would
be of considerable service to him.
