Martin Smith, said by police to
have escaped from the Yamhill coun
ty jail, carried on some of his antics
in this region Saturday, only to find
himself outwitted by police and resi
dents of the Mid-Columbia.
It seems Smith, 19 years old, had
escaped at night recently from the
Yamhill bastille, and was making
his way east by the stolen car route.
He abandoned one car two miles
west of Hood River, came into town
on foot, where he is reported to have
taken possession of a car owned by
Carl Engle, of Hood River. Proceed
ing east, he stopped for gasoline at
the Lew Riggs service station at
Rowena. Riggs, suspecting all was
not well, disconnected a wire from a
spark plug when he was checking the
oil, thus slowing the possible speed
of the car, then followed the stolen
machine into The Dalles, where he
notified authorities.

was abandoned in The Dalles, but
Smith was found at the eastern end
of town trying to continue further
by the thumb route. He confessed
the thefts, it is said, and was re
turned to Yamhill County.

Salem, Ore., May 9—Four months
administration of the unemployment
compensation law distributed two
and one-half million dollars to eli
gible jobless workers in Oregon, and
claims handled by the Hood River
office brought $30,517 to this section.
This was 1.2 per cent of the total.
Portland maintained its position at
the top of the list with 46 per cent
of the total b< nefits paid and On
tario replaced The Dalles at the
foot of the d’str.bution ladder with
.8 per cent.
Processing of claims and benefit
payments are reaching current status
rapidly. Checks are now going out
at the rate of 20.000 per week and
73 per cent of the more than 65,000
claims filed have passed for pay
ment.
Many unemployed workers
are receiving their 15th checks this
week. Average per check is $1182.
Less than 7 per cent of the total
claims received are either incom
plete or in the computing process.
The other 20 per cent have been
denied due to labor disputes, sea-
sonability, insufficient earnings in
base year or because earnings in
the base year were in occupations
not covered by law.

provide their dogs with licenses
within the 10-day period of grace
allowed them, according to C. A.
Swarts, enforcement officer, repre
senting the Hood River County Dog
Control Board. Those served with
warrants will have to buy a license
and pay a fine, it is announced..

fuss and fanfare, the thrills and the
brilliance for which the cinema

alight from their shiny new cars at
the theatre entrance, where under
batteries of flood and studio lights,
lighting up both the front of the
theatre and the sky, each star will
be greeted by the master of cere
monies and introduced over the
•‘mike’ ’ to the throngs of loyal movie
fans waiting to catch a glimpse of
their favorite stage, screen or radio
stars.
After their introductions out front,
the stars will be escorted to seats
reserved for them in the theatre
hntil they are called to the stage to
participate in the Hood River Follies.
The Follies will consist of choruses
of the city’ s most beautiful girls
doing new and professional song and
dance routines, solo singers and
dancers, riotuous comedians with
sparkling dialogle and glamorous
girls wearing the latest style crea
tions all together in a melange of
color and music that will long be
remembered as the high point in
local theatricals. The feature will
start at 7 p. m., the stars arriving at
8:45. The stage show beginning at
9 p. m. and the feature again at 9 :45.
All the stars o f the Premiere will
be members of the local younger set
who have been selected by the dir
ector and have been trained for the
last ten days in their parts.

"Street talk” reports in Hood
River early this week to the effect
that the Montgomery Ward firm
would establish an order-receiving
office in town were denied late yes
terday afternoon by officials of the
firm in Portland, who stated: "We
are not seriously considering the lo
cating of a branch store in Hood
River at the present. If we do locate
one there, it will be a small store.”

He was old enough to know better. Here’s the story: He
bought a piece of real estate and accepted an abstract of title
which was not made by an abstract company maintaining a com
plete set of abstract books.
Five years later, after building a very fine home on the prem
ises, he attempted to sell his property. The prospective purchaser

AUTOMOBILE BODIES
The May edition of the Oregon
Parent-Teacher, official publication
of the Oregon Congress of Parents
and Teachers, reveals that Hood
River County during the past year,
showed a 28 per cent gain in mem
bership. Only seven counties in Ore
gon recorded a greater percentage of
increase.
The largest P.-T. A. group in Hood
River County is Parkdale, with a I
membership of 72, followed by Cas
cade Locks, with 60, and Oak Grove
with 42. Total membership of this !
organization in Oregon is 26,155, |
10.795 of which are in the city of
Portland.
