Three habitat groups of African
birds in Field Museum of Natural
History, Chicago, include village
weaver-birds, birds of Mount Cam
eroon and Kalahari desert birds.
Weavers, which constitute the
largest and most varied bird family
of Africa, rank among the best arch
itects of the feathered world, and
the village weaver-birds are among
the most skillful nest builders of
their family. Their globe-shaped
nests are woven from strips of grass
or palm leaves. “ Woven” is not a
loosely used term, but an accurate
description of the method employed
by the birds.
Detailed studies of the nests of
another weaver species have re
vealed that certain definite knots
are used to tie the ends of the
strips of material—they are not
merely tucked in. A firmly woven
vertical ring about six inches in
diameter is first made by the birds
to serve a foundation. The hemi
spherical chamber for the eggs and
young is then added on one side,
and the down-turned spout or en
trance is added on the other.
The village weaver-bfrds exempli
fy a highly gregarious mode of liv
ing coupled with a peculiar pref
erence for association with condi
tions imposed by the existence of
socially organized human life. Rath
er than remain exposed to purely
natural conditions involving greater
dangers from predatory animals,
they build their colonies or “ vil
lages” of as many as a hundred
nests in trees near the villages of
human natives. This habit accounts
for the name that has been applied
to them. These birds occur over a
wide area of western and central
Africa.

Cascade Packing House
Consumed by Flames
Fire which broke out at 9 o clock Tuesday night completely
iestroyed a Hood River packing house of the Apple Growers
Association at 5th and Cascade Streets. The blaze of unde
termined origin started near the office in the south end of the
building and was well under way before discovered. After a
half hour it appeared that the flames were under control and it
was believed then that half of the building could be saved.
Then the fire broke out anew and developed to such propor
tions that by 10:30 o ’clock firemen were forced to fight the
conflagration from considerable distance because of the intense
heat.
The AGA cannery to the south,
the Cascade Pontiac shop and sales
rooms on the east, the Cavenah
Lumber Co yards on the south and
the Arden Farms Creamery on the
west were thought to be in consid
erable danger. Fire trucks and crews
from White Salmon and Bingen re
inforced the local orew, and as the
warehouse flames shot skyward,
firemen fought to save the adjoining
buildings. However, the fire spent
itself and with the roof burned, the
flames were boxed in the cement
walls which remained standing.
There was no wind and spectators
spoke praise for the work of the
firemen in saving nearby structures.
The warehouse, used as a receiv
ing, washing and packing station,
was valued at $50,000, while washers
and packing equipment were esti
mated to be worth a similar sum.
Stored in the warehouse were large
quantities of lugs, box shook, and
between 200 and 300 barrels of brined
cherries. Total loss was estimated
by W. Q. Bateman, manager of the
association, at $250,000. Insurance
covers the loss.
Constructed in 1926, the warehouse
was a wood structure with concrete
walls, 200 feet by 200 feet, two
stories high at the south end, and
four stories high at the north. The
covered overhead run-way connect
ing the building with the cannery re
mained intact.
Fire hoses played on all sides of
the building but seemed to have
little effect on the flames which be
came intense as the big timbers, the
walls, the flooring and the wooden
contents of the building were con
sumed.
Electric power was cut off as a
safety measure and Hood River was
in darkness for an hour and a half.
