The fanaticism and intolerance of
certain dwellers in remote hill-coun
tries of the United States are re
vealed in "Mountain Justice,” the
First National melo-drama which will
be the feature attraction at the
Roosevelt Theatre, playing Wednes
day and Thursday.
This thrilling picture, which is not
alone a dramatic sociological docu
ment, but a tender romance, co-stars
Josephine Hutchinson and George
Brent, and was directed by that ack
nowledged master of realism, Mich

Miss Hutchinson portrays Ruth
Harkins, a young mountaineer girl
who has a taste of life and educa
tion in the "outside,” and returns
to her hamlet eager to bring health
and education to at least the child
ren of the backwoods. Her one sym
pathizer and aide in this is Guy
Kibbee, a genial old physician.
Her worst enemy and opponent is
her own father, played by Robert
Barrat, a bitter fanatic who hates
everything taught by “ furriners.”
He doesn’ t hesitate to enforce his
hold upon his two daughters—little
Marcia Mae Jones is the younger
one—by lashings with a bullwhip.
Things come to such a pass that
the elder daughter, Miss Hutchinson,
in a fignt for her own life, is ob
liged to kill her father. George
Brent, a brilliant young attorney,
who has met her in New York, learns
to love her, comes to her rescue and
defends her at her trial for murder.
But there is not even justice in
this ignorant region, and she is re
moved trom the prison and flown to
another State, whose Governor re
fuses to grant extradition papers, so
she remains free.
"Mountain Justice” is a severe in
dictment! of the backwardness of
certain parts of the civilized United
States. Others in the cast, besides
those named, include Mona Barrie,
Margaret Hamilton, Robert McWade,
F*uzzy Knight, Edward Pawley, Eliz
abeth Risdon, Granville Bates, Rus

Treating its basic theme of the
fake stock racket from a light
hearted angle, RKO Rodio has
evolved a delightful and hilarious
comedy in its "Don’t Tell the Wife,”
which shows FYiday and Saturday at
the Roosevelt Theatre.
Guy Kibbee, Una Merkel and
Lynne Overman, three of the most
accomplished mirth-makers of the
screen as well as three of its most
capable players, take the leading
roles in brilliant fashion, and with
the aid of a cleverly-contrived scen
ario, excellently natural dialog, and
a first-rate supporting cast succeed
in making the film a grand piece of
entertainment.
The plot hinges on the activities of
a group of stock-selling swindlers
with Overman at their head. To ob
tain the requisite capital for their
scheme they have to get the consent
of Overman’s wife. Miss Merkel, and
she, suspicious of their honesty,
makes things difficult.
To reassure her, they persuade
Kibbee, a guileless old newspaper
man, to accept the presidency of their
company, and they start their cam
paign in fine style with a "boiler
room” full of suave telephone sales
men peddling gold mining stock right
and left. But Kibbee, unaware of
their real purposes, manages to get
the firm into hot water with the
postal authorities, and the compli
cations that ensue make the picture
one continuous roar of laughter.
The three principals, with their
contrasting roles, all add laurels to
their respective reputations by adroit
