prices, the Oregon cement mill*
lost the contract for supplying the
2.000 rtirs of cement which will
be used In building the main spill
way dam.
Hida were opened last Friday
Lowest price was submitted by
the Pacific Portland Cement com-
(mar. o f San Francisco. The Cali
fornia mill took the contract for
supplying the 565,000 barrels at
11.62 a barrel.
Popular opinion was that the
contract would fall to the Santa
Crux Cement company, another
California organization, but ask
ed 18 cents a barrel more than
the San Francisco firm
Beaver Portland Cement com
pany. Portland, which owns a
plant down at Gold Hill, bid II 82
a barrel, or 20 centa a barrel mor«-
than the low bidder.
The government is buying ce
ment for the spillway dam near
ly HO cents a barrel che*p>-r than
it paid for the cement used In con
struction of the powerhouse and
the navigation locks. Reason for
the unusually Iw price has not
been made public.
California mills enjoy an ad
vantage in freight rate« over Ore
gon mills by reason of the fact
that they ship cement north in
ballast, while the mill at Gold
Hill Is compelled to ship by rail
Santa Cru* cement Is made at
Santa Cruz, down th e r o a s t from
