Many have been called t»> r+rm solve the problem but none haw «1 answered. However, from the 1 state tire marshal s office at Salem r comes what appears to lie a solu tion. And the solution is equal!) applicable to the condition which e\isits throughout the Bonneville dam area. I’nder provisions of Chapter 579. general laws of Oregon, 1929, rural communities and towns that are unincorporated may organize a fire protection districts. The law bu«ltri •« flLlU permits the people of a rural com munity to vote a tax of two mills and to borrow money with which to purchase equipment, install wa ter mams and maintain a fire de partment. There is pressing nerd of fire protection in all of the communi ties which have grown up in the district since the government com menced work on the «lam. The Chronicle will publish 1 2 the princi|ial features of the state a law governing the creation of fire protection districts. It will ap|iear in the next issue. 1 4 THE FIRST ANNIVERSARY a 1 On October 3, 1933, the first man to find employment on Bon neville dam arrived at the reserva j tion. In the 12 months which have elapsed since the project was set in motion work has been provided for several thousand men. an«l it is today furnishing work for 2200 men. In the year the population has climbed from a few hundred to al most 4000 people; hundreds of homes have been built; new busi Theft of Flower Bring» ness centers have grown up; im Call for Bloodhound» .1 petus has been given to the de- veopment o/ the Mid-Columbia district. Another year will bring other changes. No one knows what the future holds but there is every reason to assume that the popu lation will continue to grow, and that the district will become better and better known throughout the state. 1 he task of building the dam was intrusted to the army engi neers have moved swiftly. One contract afvter another has fol lowed fast on the heels of another. The preliminary work has been ....... completed. The public, observing the progress that has been made, Oklahoma Divorce Seeker» has come to have a new respect Mu»t Cool Heel« 30 Day« for the army. The Indians and some of the old timers are prone to declare that the engineers can not conquer the river, but a year divorce. of fast work on the part of traine«! engineers is proof of the fact that Gov. the army reaches its objective.,1 that the river will be tamed and 30 the <lam completed on the «late fixed and that the dam will lie an '"m '“t" ,.h* back together." actuality within three years. c h ild r e n . b w .-a l.
