federal government V. W Iomkins
superintendent of the links, will lie
retired on (x-nsion July I. Immedia
tely thereafter he and Mrs. Iomkins
will go to California to visit relative-,.
They may decide to nuke their fu
ture home in the southern state.
Charles A. Saunders, brother of
Frank Saunders, sujierintcmlent of
the O h io links, has been a|>poiritrd
to the position vacated by Mr Tom-
kin». He and his family will occupy
the house on the reservation occupied
for so many years by the Tomkins
family.
Mr. Tomkins entered the govern
ment service in 1889 at Nrwjiort.
< tregon. After two years on the coast
he was transferred to Cascade tanks,
then in course of construction. He
came to the links as an inspector in
181 ami remained until the (ontrait
on the work was completed in 1898,
when he was shifted to the Yamhill
locks in Yamhill county. A year later
lie was transferred to Portland
where he remained for eight years.
In 1907 he was sent back to Cascade
Locks to become superintendent and
has held the position continuously
for the ¡>ast 27 years.
Born in sounty Cork, Ireland, 70
years ago, Mr. Tomkins came to the
United States as a young man to join
his sister living down in Lincoln
county. His father was an English
man, his mother a Scotswoman.
I luring his long years of service in
Cascade Locks
he has witnessed
many changes, has kept a record of
weather conditions, has seen the river

merce, has observed the boats drop
out of service one by one and has re
mained to see the building of Bonne
ville dam become a reality.
Records kept by Mr. Tomkins
carry the information that, commerce
on the Columbia river rear hed its
high ¡teak in 1906. when a total of
1417 passengers passer) through the
locks. I wo steaboats made daily
rounrltrips up and down the river
that year.
Realizing that soon the family
home which they have occupied while
their father was lorkmaster of the
Cascade locks, would soon l>e inhab-
