enced investor there are similar signals for safeguarding his in
vestments. Some of these signa of danger, issued by the Publie
Service Committee of the State Bank Division, American
Bankers Association, in conjunction with the Better Business
Bureau, are briefly indicated here.
Bro R etusns —It ia easy to promise
an abnormally high rate of dividends,
or large market profita, to prospective
investor*. Heavy risk* usually accom-
pany such lures. They are too often
th* chief talking pointe of financial
charlatans.
P bominbnt N A M ■ s — Promoters
know that th* name* and endorse
ment* of successful men carry weight.
They ar* often used without authori
sation. The prudent investor will leok
beyond names and will investigate.

of opportunity which the proverbial

are usually expensive piece* of misin
formation. When used a* “confiden

small investor they ar* generally of
spurious character.

sional promoters often arbitrarily ad
vance the price* of the share* they
sell a* their campaign* gain headway
to create buying excitement and in
duce new buyers to get in before the
next rise. Such price advances are
artificial, usually employed merely to
“speed up” the unloading of shares.
T hs T elephone C anvas * — Irre-
iponsible vendor* find it eaay to work
over the telephone to victimize incau
tious investor*. The cautious investor
will not enter into securities transac
tions by telephone unless he person
ally knows with whom bs is dealing.

promoter who “gives his services” in
organizing a company ar as an officer
of it and advertises that he does eo,
will bear watching.
T he I rresponsible G uarantee —Ir
responsible sellers of securities often
“guarantee” certain profita, or even
that they will bny back aharee when

Unsuccessful companies forced into

upon which to buy real estate, espe
cially when you cannot see it before
you buy.

ventures are honest but fail because
