Following the disastrous freeze of
1919, Hilrnar Papat, manager of the
Portland Gas A Coke Co., who owns
an orchard place on the White Salmon
river above Husum, Wash.,' began ex
perimenting with the propagation of
nursery stock that would be frost re
sistant aud proof against winter lu-
jury; heart rot and cankerous dis
eases.
As a preliminary to the exp«*riment-
al work, an intensive survey was
made of the Hood River and White
Salmon valleys. In an orchard of
more than 2,099 trees on a place ad
joining Mr. Papst'a acreage was found
a group of treea ao dietin'rive in
character and perfect in growth, vi
tality and freedom from disease as
to at once arreat attention
These
trees, which were » years old, had
been topworked 21 years ago to such
commercial varieties as Bpilzeni.urga
were in mag-
and Newtown*. They
r~
nlflcent vigor aud were without blem-
ish In spite of the fact that in numer-
ous instances they were growing with-
out favorable soil condltiona
A study of the tree« raven led that
they came from a stock, probably
some obscure seedling, which pos-
sessed distinctive characterixi n-s that
immunized it from serious debilitating
Influences. From thia disco«cry Mr.
Papet and A. C. McCormick, Hiqierln-
tendent of hls orchard place, evolved
the Mount Adams Nursery Co. The
Husum tract at first turned out nurs
ery stock for the immediate neighbor
hood. The tract has been developed
to the point, however, where u iiatron-
age has been invited ¿rom out wide
districts.
Gordon G. BroWn, who investigated
the atock of the Mount Adams Nurs-
ery Co., says that the trees grown
there from the immunized parent
tree» are very hardy and vigorous.
Hood River orchardiats will soon
be employing an army of soldiers,
which will wage war on codling moth.
The new aoldlera have a formidable
name. Axcogaater Garpocapaae, which
In ordinary parlance ineana that they
are parasite« that feed on codling
moth, one of the worst peats that
northwestern ordiardists have to con
tend with.
The insect, which according to E. J.
Newcomer, federal entomologist at
Yakima, Wash., will destroy 20 to 26
Iter cent of the worms as they leave
apples, is a tiny wasp-llke Insect,
termed hymenopterous by scientists.
It was discovered In eastern fruit
belts aud brought to Yakima by fed
eral entomologists, where Its work
has been observed for two or three
years. Mr. Newcomer has sent a jar
of tlie insects to Leroy Childs. The
little was|>s attack the eodllug moth
worms and. kill them.
“While the insects are not expected
to clean up the codling moth, their
destructiveness ou the serious pest is
considered well worth while,” • Baid
Mr. Childs.
W. J. Kocken will leave here this
week and spend two days in the Yak
ima district, gathering the tiny black
wasps. On Ills return his catch will
lie distributed among orchardiats of
the valley.
