Friday night the Ilood River high
school basketeers turned the trick.
What? They beat The Dalles, of
course. The game started at 8.45
with rooters and backers of each
team yelling and telling the world
their team was the best. Just as the
game was about to be called Referee
Ijkfferty made an elegant little speech
to those rooters whose falling it is
to let off their surplus enthusiasm by
whistling. He was given the privilege
. of being the only whistler in the
crowd and the game started.
The Dalles made the first score.
But Hood River was not to tie out
played. Hathhorn shot a pretty one

that quarter managed to get a lead
of three points over Hood River.

point lead was cut down to two, the
score being 13 to 11. The last quar
ter showed some real passing with
both teams playing their best. Hood

an advantage and they crept into
the lead and held it. The game ended
with the score 18 to 13 in favor of
Hood River.

son, Mrs. Pearl Holliiigworth and Miss
Gladys Wilson, gave a double number
of high class music. This was fol
lowed by a girls’ Indian club drill,
led by Mira Mildred Shepherd, with
Miss Georgianna Slocoip at the piano,
¿this was something new to 4nr high
school pupils, along the line of physi
cal education, and surprised the as
sembly with its rhythm and grace.
Miss Margaret Harding, of the high
school faculty, then gave an excellent
talk on the happiness of service. She
named health, love of work and
friends as the three requisite« of hap
piness in life.
The Hood River Box Co., managed
here the past several years by H. A.
Bell, has begun a campaign to mar
ket $50,000 of stock, to bo Issued la
shares of $10 each, to businessmen
and orchardlata of the valley. It ia
proposed to make the expanded box
manufacturing enterprise a coopera
tive concern.

Junior High Notea
The junior high second team de
feated Frankton 20 to- 5 Friday night.
The honors are now even as Frankton
won a previous game.
At an assembly Friday during the
eighth period, Frances Sherwood and
Elma Howard presented two duets.
Mr. Barnett has announced that the
oratorical contest has commenced.
Slides on old Quebec were shown to
the pupils of the school. Mr. Barnett
stated that he would pay a price of
50 cents to the maker <ff the first good
yell given him by Tuesday, February
10. He also wants a good school
song. Winners will be announced next
week.
SNOWSHOE CLUB

pant in winter aports of the club.
Mark Weygandt, veteran Hood guide,
met the party at Parkdale. The
guests were R. W. Montague, T. R.
Conley and B. C. Sammons, all of
Portland.
The recreation party returned Tues
day afternoon. All declared that the
trip was an appealing one. The snow
on the north side of Mount Rood was
reported light.

finding a crocus bloom x>n her front
lawn. For yearn local folk have ac
cepted the first crocus on the Bart-
moss lawn as a harbinger of depart
ing winter.
