Tbe handling of cull apples is an ex
pensive proposition, according to John
I Peters, Vvenatchee. He would have
the grower not grow them at all. I
would'like to lead the growers over the
trail of the cull and show them how
unnecessary it is to have them," said
Mr. Peters. "It cost a lot of money
to handle culls. 1 here is the picking,
the hauling out of the orchard, trans
fer to the warehouse, handling by the
sorters, wheeling about by the floor
man, loading onto the wagon or truck
and hauling to tbe dump or to the by
product plant.

I would make the growers so disguBted
with this trail of the cull that they
would grow no more of them. To at
tain that end necessitates a number of
things, such as ample space for the
trees in the orchard, special varieties
suited to the soil and the location, con
sistent pruning, plenty of fruiting
wood, sufficient thinning, proper irri
Ration and spraying, elimination of
non-resident owners and the reduction
of the acreage per man.
"We havergone decidedly wrong in
the Wenatchee district in the choice of
varieties for certain soils and loca
tions. Particluarly is this true of the
Winesap, which should never have been
planted in the upper IWenatchee dis
trict, such as the Okanogan country,
where this variety does not make size
very readily, rlanting in the ruture
should be done more intelligently with
reference to line suitableness of the
variety to the soil and the climate.
Pruning should be done consistently
and should never be drastic. Plenty of
fruiting wood is needed for one can
take off if there are too many apples,
but one cannot put them on. In thin
ning I never use the shears. They
are for the feeble only and they have
absolutely no place in thinning when
done by normal healthy individuals.
There are too may apples made culls
by the point of the shears touching the
apples left on the tree. Removal of
the extra apples by the hand is so
easily and quickly done that the shears
are a hindrance.
'It is not generally appreciated that
by thinning one can get more uniform
size on the tree and thus eliminate a
great deal of work. One can get 80 to
90 per cent of the apples to go into
two sizes and one can then dispense
with the sizing machine. I call it the
bruiser. By that sort of thinning one
can makejannual bearing a possibility.
Kegarding irrigation, I have no
ticed that apples that once suffered for
lack of water during the growing sea
son do not get their normal brilliant
color but get a sort of coppery color,
Apples that are checked in growth due
to the soil getting too dry never re
cover so as to get the proper color.

for owning only 20 acres of orchard.
Tbe fact is that most orchardists are
trying to handle too much land. A
man can make a good living for him
self and family and have money be
sides on five acres. If one. aims at
quality production five acres are
enough."

Mrs. Smith will leave for Portland
tomorrow to spend the holidays with
her husband and his people in Port
land.
