The company last week still lacked
nine cars on an order of 45 carloads of
export Newtowns, which will be
shipped to New York City, whence
they will, go to Denmark, Norway,
Sweden and South America.
"We still have a total of about 70
cars to roll from Hood River," eaid
Mr. McKercher. "Our total shipments
from the mid-Columbia, eastern Ore
gon and the Willamette Valley will
teach 350 cars."
The following obituary notice of the
father of C. E Coovert la taken from
the Dayton Tribune: :
James W. Coovert was born in Peble
county, Ohio, June 16, 1847, and died
at his home in Dayton. Oregon. No
vember 27. 1922, being 75 years, 5
months and 11 days old.
He was united in marriage to Miss
Susan Frankenberger in Newton coun
ty, Indiana, November 26, 18G8, and to
this union four'sons were born : Chas.
E. (Bert). William E. (Ennis). Rich
ard E. and James E. Coovert, who sur
vive him. His wife died December 5,
1905. On October 16, 1908. he was
married to Mrs. Mary M. Howard,
who with her three daughters, Grace,
Mabel and Vida, also survive him.
He enlisted as a private in the Civil
war at Newton, Indiana. Februarv 24.
1865, for one year or during the war.
and was mustered out at Nashville.
Tenn., September 19. 1865.
He became a member of the G. A.

He first came to this parr, of Oregon
from Indiana in the fall of 1871. Af
ter seven years' residence in Oregon
he moved to Dawson county. Nebras
ka, and lived there until the summer
of 1890 when he returned to Dayton
and vicinity and had lived here contin
uously till the time of his death.
He had been a member of church
from childhood and was a member of
the Evangelical church since its organ
ization in this part of Oregon, to the
time or his death, and did much to fur
I ther the work of the church. He held
office in this church continuously until
failing health caused him to resign
about one year ago. His sickness was
of two or more years' duration and
during all his suffering he was a pa-
I tient suflerer.
Besides his family he leaves a host
of sorrowing friends. Funeral services
were held in the Evangelical church
here, Tuesday, November 28, 1922,
Rev. F. E. Fisber officiating. Inter
ment was made in the I. O; O. F. cem
etery. Ritualistic services of the G.
A. R. were conducted at the grave by
members of Upton Post.
MARKET IS GOOD
Dan Wuille & Co. last week received
a message from London to the effect
that Newtown apples were celling at
16 shillings the box. At the rate of
exchange at present prevailing this
will net growers an approximate $1.75
per box. , - '
Shippers say the steady trend of the
export market is a bright feature for
local growers, a large portion of whose
tonnage is wewtowns, considered the
staple export apple.

Last Thursday night about 8 o'clock.
Mose Jarvis's apple house burned
down. They got the horses and cow
out from the leanto, but lost about
3,000 boxes of apples, the grader, and
a, ton and a half of hav. The Bodes
ana appie nouse were insured, which
will help to cover the loss. Mr. and
Mrs. Jarvis wish to thank the neigh
bors who bo kindly helped them save
what they could. We all heartily sym
pathize with them in their misfortune.

Mrs. Smith and Miss Gleiser braved
the storm Saturday morninz to bo to
Hood River shopping. Thinking the
stage would overtake them, thev
started to walk and were picked up
and given a ride when nearing town.

Harvey Thompkins has returned
from Illinois.
Mr. and Mrs. Hill and Bobbie re
turned Friday night from the McKin
ley ranch near Blalock. They went
goose hunting and Mr. Hill got five,
bringing two home alive.

at Mrs. Dutro's, is postponed indef
initely on account of the weather and

Mrs. Edwards and son, Stanley, re
turned from a week's visit in Portland
Sunday night.
