FRUIT INDUSTRY TO ASK FOR AID The salmon pack of the Columbia river district, which is considered one of Oregon's greatest industries, did not equal in value this year the pack of the five fruit canneries located in Salem. According to statistics, the salmon pack of the Columbia liver district amounted to 415,000 cases, witn an average value of $6.50 a case, or a grand total of $2,697,500. The canned fruit pack in tne nve Salem canneries aggregated 677,000 cases, which were sold at an average of $4 each. This would fix the value of the fruit pack of these concerns at $3,046,500. During the past four years the salmon industry has been assisted bv the state to the extent of $62,600 annually. An additional $125,000 a year is received by this industry ior propagation purposes from licenses. r. a. ParV nrPdiHpnt of the state horticultural board, in a statement last week said that the Oregon iruit indus try was laree enough to demand finan cial recognition from the state. This assistance, he said, is needed to elim- innlA and nrpvnnt nests which threaten to diminish the fruit yield of this state. Mr. Bccklcj Tells of Mexico A. W. Beckley, owner of ranch in terests and oil property near 1 ampico. Mex.. addressed the Brotherhood Club of Asbury Methodist church Sunday night on conditions in Mexico. Mr. Beckley, who with bis lamny is now residing in Hood River, says that no business ethics such as Americans un derstand them exist in Mexico. Every business institution, he stated, has to pav heavy tribute to the various gov ernment interests. Mr. Beckley. who has made a study of the development of Mexican govern ments from Spaniih administration un til the present, declared that the ll- son administration Dy me appareni faeeilation with which it met outrages of the Mexicans caused affairs to te much worse thsn they otherwise would have been. Lost.Uie Crew Mores Snowfall around Lost Lake has caused crews engaged on the Lest Lake Highway to break camp for the winter. It is constructed of the finest materials and with a high degree of craftsmanship to give years of satisfactory service no m akeshif t construction merely to meet a price. , Eight stout ash pillars, from floor to roof, insure permanent strength and rigidity. The four wide-opening doors are a real convenience in getting in and out. Broad windows provide clear vision in every direction. Seats are of generous proportions with deep springs to give lasting com fort. The upholstery is of mohair velvet plush, as durable as it is attractive. The heater will give warmth and comfort on cold days. The Light-Six has proved its reliability on the highways of the world. The ample power, quietness and remarkable flexibility of its motor are a source of continuous satisfaction. It is easy to handle in traffic. Arens, noted musical director, who during the summer months spends a part of the time on his Middle Valley ranch and who al ways conducts a summer studio in Portland, voices without qualification the praises of the natural beauty of the park-like meadows on the north west base oi Mount Hood. "Prof. Arens," says Jake Lenz, vet eran hunter of the mid-Columbia sec tion, who is probably as well posted on the region around Hood as any man of the section, "visited the park region several summers ago. He told us that he wanted to see the best to be had in the Mount Hood region. We took him into this paradise where the streams that feed the West Fork of Hood river have their source. He was in ecstasies all the time we were there. Prof. Arens called the park, that has since become known as Eden Park, the name having been applied by fmembers of the Oregon Nature Lovers' Club, 'The Garden.of the Gods.' He declared it to be the most alluring mountainous region he had ever seen. "The park area, which will ulti mately be opened by trails of the United States Forest Service, has long been.loved by hunters." Mrs. Castner Finds East Prosperous Mrs. C. H.
