CLOSED ALL DAY ARMISTICE DAY SATURDAY, NOVEMBER 11th fczzznoi Consolidated Mercantile Co. HOOD RIVER ODELL TUM-A-LUM So many of our friends havo asked us, "WHAT IS THE MEANING OF THE WORD TuM-A-LUH.' Wo are going to explain the meaning of the word. Like a good many words in English, "TUM-A-LUM" is derived from a good many languages. Originally from the Chinook Indian meaning "Scattered Waters," "TUM-A-LUM" has como to mean in Irish, "duality;" in Dutch, "Handling tho best grades;" in German, "Ser vice;" in French, "To excell;" in Spanish, "The best for tho money." Put all of tho abovo meanings together and you have tho meaning of "TUM-A-LUM" in English. But in the language of Hood River, "TUM-A-LUM" stands for anything in tho Lumber and Fuel Lino. We have in operation 50 yards in Washington and Oregon. Wherever you see "TUM-A-LUM,'" it means SER VICE as well as QUALITY. FREE PLANS FOR THE ASKING. Phone 4121. That's our self-starter. Her youth, her magnificent riding and daring combine to make her an idol with the people. The picture shows her on her horse "Victoria," going over the bars. She will be at the Night Horse Show of the Pacific In ternational Live Stock Exposition, Portland, Ore., November 4-11. The Night Horse Show became so popular last year that three matinees were added to the program, and they will be continued this year, of course. Over $16,000 is offered in premiums for the Horse Show alone and seven $1000 stakes are offered almost un precedented in horse show annals. One of these Is for the heavy horse driv ing contest, an event of wild excite ment among the horsemen. The horse show this year is replete with color and action. Some of the finest horses of the entire country will show their paces In the big arena, and some of the most enthusiastic horsemen, driv ers and riders will exhibit the paces of the prancing beauties of the equine world. OREGON INCOME TAX TO BE MUCH LESS According to a special survey of the cancellations and decreases in tax rates provided by the Revenue Act of 1921, completed by Clyde G. Huntley, collector of Internal Revenue, reduc tions in federal taxes which are effect ive for the current year will save Ore gon taxpayers the enormous sum of $4,399,282.51. "The reduction in taxes for l'Jzz, explained Collector Huntley, "is ap proximately as follows: Income tax, $1,820,000; transportation tax, $2,113, 479.81; sales and luxury tax, $465,- 802.70. Of the $1,S),UUU income tax reduction,.' $1,200,000 is distributed amnne 43.650 taxpayers with incomes of less than 5,000 and $550,000 applief to surtaxes on larger income, while $160,000 affects property valuations. The new exemptions allowed heads of families and for dependents is now $2,500 and $400. which means an in creased exemption for a married couple with one dependent of $700, or a total savinsr of S28. "The relief afforded by the decreased taxation affects every Oregon taxpayer who travels, pays freight, sends an ex press package, buys a Pullman berth takes a drink of soda water, or who has a taxable income. In other words, the relief extends to all classes. The saving in transportation tax is distributed as follows: Freight. $1.- 071 258.81 : express, $4,734 95; pasaen ger. $1,037,486.05. The saving of $465,- 802.70 in the sales and luxury tax is made up of the following items: Wearing apparel. $208,844.84; per fumes, cosmetics and patent medicine, $68,395.10; soda fountain, $138,562.76. "The saving in transportation tax of $2,113,479.81 represents only the tax collected by the office in Portland. In addition to that amount all such taxes paid bv residents of Oregon to the Southern Pacific, to the Pullman Company, and to the several express companies, were paid by thote com panies in the district where the head offices are maintained, so it is reason able to suppose that the actual saving on account of this tax to the people of Oregon aggregates $3,000,000." Practically the only so-called luxury tax now remaining is that on admis sions to theatres and other places of amusement, and this tax has been in effect since 1917. But even in this tax there has been a considerable saving for the reason that admissions of 10 cents or less are not now taxable. Furthermore, the 1921 act relieves from the payment of this tax the American Legion and associated wom en's auxiliaries which have heretofore paid the same. Notwithstanding this state confronts a reduction of more than $4,000,000 in federal taxes annually, Collector Hunt ley predicts that the additional revenue in the form of increased incomes as sured by the marked expansion in all lines of bucinecs in Portland and throughout the state will eventually absorb the $4,000,000 wiped out by the last revenue act.
