ORPIIEUM CIRCUIT
ANNIVERSARY NEAR
When the Orpheum theatre blossoms
out in gay raiment and glad trimmings
for the week of October 22, and pro
vides an especially elaborate program
m keeping with its fancy tittings,
natrons will be made aware by Man
aeer Frank McGettiean that the Port
land theatre, in common with all others
in the circuit, is celebrating the pass
ing of a third of a century of notable
historv.
The Portland Orpehum, together
with its ramifications and affiliations
spread over 15 states and western Can
ada, will be resDlendent in bunting,
bright with flags and, Mr. McGettigan
expects, crowded with patrons through
out the week of the anniversary.
No one, no matter how slightly
versed in the lore of the show shop.
but knows the name of this famous
vaudeville circuit it is an institution
to tens of thousands citizens through
out the land, but not nearly all of
these know the elements of Orpheum
history that make its rise into promi
nence in the amusement industry a
dream of modern business progress.
Thirty three and a third years ago
two young men in San Francisco, Mar
tin lieck and Morris Meyerfeld. Jr
conceived the idea of this circuit of
vaudeville theatres, and from that con
ception they have created by their per
sonal eliort the greatest amusement
enterprise of its kind in existence.
Uelieving in it with the fiery zeal oi
the fanatic, they began an endless
struggle, which has culminated in the
success by the Orpheum circuit.
On that day In J8M9, which is nowkso
indelibly stamped as a landmark in the
development of more than two score
theatres of the great cities of the mid
die and far west the assets of these
young men consisted of the lease of a
small, unpopular theatre which had
never been able to offer a pretentious
entertainment to follow a specific pol
icy, a few hundred dollars in cash, a
mighty will and the vision from which
empires are made.
Then they started to create history
with the entertainments they offered
Never had there been such a galaxy of
stars on one program. Rival managers
shook their head and made wagers on
the length of time which would elapse
before the young spendthrifts found
the sheriff in possession of their the
atre. But the public of San francisco
surged to the box office.
Their daring became the wonder of
the amusement world, and their sue
cess eclipsed anything which even they
had dreamed. Once firmly established
in San Francisco, their restless energy
assumed definite realization with the
growth of their prestige and capital.
Los Angeles . beckoned, and soon a
theatre was under their management
and the first link in the chain which
was destined to enmesh all the great
cities from the racihe coast to Chi
cago, as well as reach down to New
Orleans on the south, and embrace
Winnipeg on the north.
Never have the men who dreamed
this galaxy of amusement places made
a mistake in the future growth and
prosperity of a city they marked for a
link in the chain; never have they
been mistaken in the direction in
which the cities of their choice were
to expand with the passing of years,
IJut these operations, great as they
have been, are dwarfed, as compared
with the insight they have displayed in
divining public taste in amusement
lh is has been manifest not only in the
selection of the individual acts of the
program, but in the Bkillful blending
of the component parts of the enter
tainment, and, above all, in their an
ticipation of the changes in the public
demand.
His Rheumatism
Has Entirely
Disappeared
The successful treatment of rheuma
tism by taking Tanlac is one of the
outstanding features of that remark
able medicine. Thousands of people
everywhere have testified that it has
brought them complete relief from this
tortuous disease. Edward Ware, 2526
Juneau St,, Seattle, Wash., says:
"I had all sorts of trouble with my
stomach and was in pain day and night
from rheumatism. I was completely
run-down and could hardly work. Tan
lac overcame my troubles and fixed me
up in great shape. I'm considerably
heavier than 1 was and I feel fit as a
fiddle all the time.''
When the digestive system, liver and
kidneys are not working properly, uric
acid and other impurities accumulate
in the muscles and joints, causing
rheumatism. Tanlac quickly over
comes this condition by enabling the
vital organs to perform their functions
properly. Get a bottle today at any
good druggist's.
W. V. PERRY PRAISES
ROADS OF OREGON
W. V. Perry. East Side orchard ist.
who last year, following apple harvest.
started out with Mrs. Perry and their
friend, Joellengst, on a long distance,
leisurely automobile tour, has returned
home and is now offering to sell his
motor home. Mr. Perry, who had the
house especially constructed on the
chassis of a small automobilesays he
enjoyed all of the 8,000 miles of the
long trip, but that the pleasantest part
of the journey was the return home
over Oregon highways. The party
toured through 11. states, l hey left
here for California and traveled from
there through Arizona and New Mexi
co Into Texas. They spent consider
able time in Oklahoma visiting relatives.
'Oregon highways will hold their
own with any state in the Union, I be
lieve," says Mr. Perry. "They beat
anything we saw. California and her
much boasted highway system peters
out, ; hen one gets off the main trav
eled routes. We learned this by sad
experience. But the worst roads we
found anywhere were in Arizona. They
sure are as near impassable there as
one can imagine. And we also hope
that it may never be the misfortune of
any of our friends to get into the mud
of the black belt of Texas and Okla
homa."
