HOOD RIVER ODELL a ROUGH WRITERS HAVE FEAST AT CAMP f PPPQHMAI QHflDDlAlfw Samuel Lancaster provided a feapt of venison for the eight trained lions and one lioness, out from the east un der guidance and exhibition or Mr. ana Mrs. George Palmer Putnam, who spent Sunday afternoon and evening at his Columbia gorge camp. Mr. and Mrs. Putnam, who know the people of uregon, having lived nere lor a num ber of years, knew just how to make their notables perform, and the lions and Ruth Hale roared, purred and sang. "Burv Me Not on the Lone Prairie" in barbershop harmony. Per haps the fine fettle of the traveling menagerie was due in part to a feast of Hood River Gravenstein apples, do nated for the occasion by H. K. Dav enport. They ate them to the core. The viaitine notables, wno Hereto fore have been known as the "Rough Writers." were: Charles Hanson Towne, George S. Chappell, Wallace Jrwin, Frederick O tsrien, John Held, Jr., Walter Trumbull, Charles Well ington Furlone. Hubbard Hutchinson and Ruth Hale. They left Monday morning, after wrestling with huge "Souse Sea" sand fleas (really Puget Sound crabs) deposited in their beds at tne instigation or one w. r. strand borg. The fleas were gathered in for the speical benefit of Author O Hrien. It was a red letter evening at the big open-sided dining room of Mr. Lancaster's picturesque and romantic camp. A large party or Portland folk had accompanied the visiting writers and drawer Mr. Held, Jr., is a bit temperamental and doesn't like it when the writers get all of the atten tion ann me drawers get leic out en tirely. Mr. Held is an illustrator, The big dining room was crowded with Oregon folk, among them many local lions and lionesses, fires crackled in the big four-sided fireplace within the diing room and in the outside fur naces. Walter Jenkins gave some VO' cal solos. When the meal was ended Mr. Lan caster introduced Mayor Baker, who welcomed the "rough writers" to the land of smiling skies and sunshine. He cited Oregon s mountains and her Hood Kiver apples. The latter received real eulogy. Major Furlong responded. A party of Umatilla Indians, stars in the Round Up show, gave soncrs and I dances. With Mr. Jenkins leading, the party engaged in hearty community I singing. following the dinner the nartv took to the deep woods near by, where some two score Mazamas presided over camp fire. After a hymn or two Frank Branch Rilev. that little he mountain j lion of Oregon, orator and actor, be came master of ceremonies and there after for a time thmers moved. No numbers were more pleasing than the stories and recitations by Anthony auwer. The part? penetrated the wilderness by stages. After the campfire activi ties Mr. Lancaster led them on. zie sagging upward to a fir canopied point of the Columbia eoree. whence the Oregon and Washington abutments of the Bridge of the Gods could be seen. Suddenly on Biadford's Island a huge red fire leaped upward, illuminating tepees of Indians, who could be seen dancing. The rythmic rumble of a torn torn floated up to the watchers. Mr. Lancaster told the story of the Bridge of the Gods and as he BDoke. a signal fire began to blaze on the Wash ington abutment. In a few minutes another lighted up the south top of the approach to the ancient bridge. Horsemen could be seen riding around the fire on the south side, and the watchers were carried back in their imagination to the daya centuries ago when Redmen actually rode their ponies across the gigantic causeway. The disillusionment was only ended by the rumbling of No. 17. the westbound crack pagssenger train of the O.-W. R. & JN., Hying from Chicaeo down the gorge to Portland. It was a dramatic and inspiring close to the evening of fun, interspersed with a little serious ness, and Mr. Lancaster and the Ma zamas deserve the hearty thanks of Oregonians for providing the affair. Among the Hood Kiver folk present at the dinner and celebration for the visiting writers were: Mr. and Mrs, W. 11. Boddy, Mr. and Mrs. E. O, Blanchar, Mr. and Mrs. H. K. Daven port, Mr. and Mrs. U. H. Sletton and Leslie Butler. The traveling menageries was due to come to Hood River that the populace might feast its eves on mental eiants of the eastern jungles. They were delayed several hours in getting into Portland, however, and the jaunt here had to be cancelled. The delay in part was caused by an eccentricity of Pen dleton cowboys in attending church services at an early hour. The "rough writer" train passed the cowboy, citv about 5.30. A bevy of the punchers boarded the train, and it was necessary for the writers to swing through a spiritual sea. Independent Fruit Growers We are Sales Agents the kind you have been looking for.
