In bebalf of orchardists of the Hood
River valley who may need lime for
application to their soils, Gordon G.
Brown, of the Hood Kiver Experiment
Station, recently sought data from A.
B. Cord ley, who is secretary of tbe
State Lime Board. The latter tent
here a circular letter issued by the
board. Tbe letter, in full, follows :
"Agricultural lime may be had from
the Oregon State Lime Board at $4 a
ton f. o. b. cars. In order to secure
special freight rates on ground lime
stone orders should be for carload lots
of not less than 30, 40, or 50 tons.
Since the lime is sold at cost of pro-
duction and no extra charge is made to
cover possible credit losses, cash should
accompany all orders.
'Vine special freight rate on agricul
tural lime is based on car loads of 30,
40, or 50 tons. For special rate on ag
ricultrual lime consult tariff schedule
No. 233-G, page 33. The approximate
rate, less 25 per cent, to the following
valley points from Rock Point is as
follows :
"Eugene. $2 a ton : Junction City.
I $2. 12 J; Albany, $2.25; Salem, $2.374 1
Woodbourn, $2.50: Canby or Oregon
City, $2.62J.
More than 50 per cent of the
'heavy" soils of western Oregon are
acid in nature and are actually in need
of physical improvement. Lime on
the 'heavy' soils makes the land more
friable, easier cultivated, more pro
ductive through better tillage and
through the availability of plant foods
released by tbe chemical action
brought about by the lime.
"According to experiment station
data on soils which are poor, light, and
lacking in organic matter, or dry. the
application of lime should be small.
On soils which are composed largely of
clay and well filled with organic mat
ter the application should be heavier.
The amount of lime to be used will
vary from 500 to 6,000 pounds to the
acre. Ihe 'heavy' sou should nave
two tons of lime to the acre.
The time to use lime depends pri
marily upon convenience, althohgh tbe
spring or fall is usually considered a
better time to apply lime as the lime
can be spread and harrowed in after
the seed bed has been prepared. All
crops, including cereals, share in the
benefit from lime. The nonleeumes
profit indirectly through the trreater
supply of nitrates, the improved tilth,
and, with wheat for example, a more
tolerant soil medim.
'Evidence from investigations and
farm experience amply demonstrates a
consistent and substantial increase in
grain yield where the rotation was
limed. A gain of 3.5 bushels is credited
to lime in the 15-year test at tbe Ohio
station. In southwest Michigan, a
test with rye gave a response of 60
per cent increase from an application
of lime. Similar reports may be had
from any section of the country wheie
lime has been used on the acid soils.
"Ground limestone on the white land
of the College farm this year showed
an increase of .45 of a ton more of
mixed clover and grass hay than the
untreated plats, 'and the plats treated
with limestone and manure produced
.82 of a ton more than the untreated
plats. The limed plats had a much
better stand of clover while the
manure increased the growth of the
clover, rye grass and other grasses.
There was much more clover on the
limed areas than on the unlimed plats.
The general crops of the plats under
observation consisted of alsike clover.
with rye grass and a mixture of other
common hay grasses.
In a rotation system, it is advisable
to use the lime with the legume crop,
becauae of the effect it will bave on
the land for the crops to follow. Lime
should never be plowed under because
it works downward and naturally
leaches into the lower lavers of the
toil. Land with imperfect drainage
and much of the uplands, particularly
the worn grain lands and the red hill
soils respond ta lime. The effect on
imperfectly drained soil is not as last
ing owing to the leaching out of the
lime by the excess supply of water.
"ihe physical benefits arsinar from
the granulation of soils by lime are:
Makes tillage more effective and lets
costly; renders soil permeable; aids
reception, storage, and distribution of
moisture ; facilitates control of evap
oration ; fosters nitrate production :
and avoids nitrogen-starvation, espec
ially with legumes and fortifies against
'heavy' and winter-killing. Lime is
not to be considered in the strict sense
a a fertilzer but as an agent that
neutralizes the acid materials in the
soil, thereby making the land more
tolerant for legume and other field
crops."
