i ' 0 3 nOOD RIVER GLACIER, THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 7, 1022 The new (joodyeor Cross-Rib Tread Cord A Popular-Priced Cord Tire Without a Rival The new Goodyear Cross-Rib Tread Cord Tire is built with genuine high-grade long-staple cotton as a foundation. It is liberally oversize -the 412-inch tire, for example, measuring nearly 5 inches. The deep, clean-cut, cog-like pattern of its tread affords excellent traction even in snow and mud, engaging the road like a cogwheel. The scientific distribution of rubber in this tread-the wide center rib and the semi-flat contour gives a thick, broad surface that is exceedingly slow to wear. This new tire is a genuine Goodyear through and through in design, in material, in construction. It costs less to buy than the net price you are asked to pay for many "long discount" tires of unknown reputation and value. . WESITNGHOUSE BATTERIES GIBBS' BATTERY STATION JW Cs-rde Avenue EXPORTS OF APPLES HAVE BEEN HUGE The importance of the United King dom as a market for applea exported from the United States is evidenced by the fact that tho annual exports to that country during the past 10 years have averatred 1.0U9.412 barrels, or 65.8 oer cent of the total annual apple exDorta from this country, says a re view lust issued Dy me uepanmenT, oi agriculture. The apple crop ot the United States in 1921 was estimated at 20,098,000 barrels and the total ex porta during that year amounted to 1.936,224 barrels, of which 1,498,839 barrels were shipped to the United Kingdom. The exDorts of applos from this countrv from January 1 to June 30 of this year, amounted to 524,404 bar rel, of which 3,471 barrels were mar keted in England. Canada is the chief competitor. The commercial crop of Canada in 1921 was 3,771,100 barrels. The exports during the Canadian fiscal year ending March 31, 1922, amounted to 1,845,955 barrels, of which 1,315,938 barrels were shipped to the United Kingdom. The season for American apples in England opens around September 1 and closes about April 30. During this period Canadian and American compe tition is keen. The British trade is iunDlied mainlv through the auction sales and through importers who main tain wholesale houses wnere iruit is sold at private sale. The American fruit is handled largely by the auction houses. The important auction points in Great Britain where American ap ples are handled are Glasgow, Liver pool, Manchester, London, Hull and Southampton. FRUIT MARKET IS IN DIRE PLIGHT America, with its greatest fruit and tiarrut oKIi n vrr ia ttiaintr ITli linn a nf dollars in apples, peaches, plums and potatoes daily because ot me ihck or markets. An investigation at Chicago, the na tion's market center, last week showed commission houses accept only the se lect or fancy .grades which are often sold as ordinaries to get them on the market before they perish. Great quantities of fruit are rotting nn the ground due to nign ireignt rates, combined with a bumper crop in every section of the country. The American f ruit urowers, inc.. which, until this season, did a large national business has been forced to turn back hundreds of cars on the shippers. An example or the loss cited was 30 carloads of potatoes on track at Chicago one day last week. These potatoes sell for from $1 40 to S1.50. The cost or getting them to the market is about $1.45. The grower is lucky if they are not sold at an actual loss. Apples from Nebraska cost one ship per of five cars from four to 19 cents per bushel. They were a fancy grade. but commission men claim they would not sell above 65 cents per bushel. which was not, more than the freight and picking costs. Michigan crops are enormous. Several commission houses admitted sending grocers checks for sums rang ing from one cent to one dollar in pay inent for carloads of fruit after freight and broker s charges were deducted. Canning factories in Michigan and Wisconsin are working at top speed trying to preserve large fruit crops of these states. What Seems To Be The Reason You Don't Build This Season?
