The convenience! and aecommoda
tiona of a hurh class tourist hotel are
complements of the lurea of a highway
in a scenic region. This is true, even
though the road be the Columbia River
Highway. Keeults of this summer
have oroven it.
Before the Columbia Goge Hotel was
huwtby S. Benson parties of tourists.
traveling on large sightseeing cars and
out for a jaunt of a few hours or the
part of a day, usually came no further
than Multnomah falls or bagle creek.
although many of them knew of the
orchards and scenic charm of the Hood
River valley. Eastern agencies, arrang
ing itineraries of tneir patrons, railed
to recommend the longer trip up the
Columbia River Highway for the rea
son that no large tourist hotel was
available.
lhat is all changed this year and a
large percentage of the tourists, who
travel to metropolitan centers by rail.
making Portland one of their bases for
sightseeing, call for a trip to the Hood
River valley. A meal at the Cloumbia
Gorge hotel has become a feature of
the day's highway trip.
Wm. bhaw. who drives one of the
Tyrrell Trip sightseeing cars, was at
the Gorge Hotel last week on his
ninth consecutive day with a sightsee
ing party. During the past six weeks.
he estimates that 3,000 tourists, who
probably would not have seen the
orchard districts but for the Columbia
uorge Hotel, nave oeen Drought here
over the Columbia River Highway.
"Our charge for this automobile ride
from Portland," says Mr. Shaw,
"reaches $6.50, but 1 have found the
tourists all declaring it the best in-
Mr. and Mrs. M. E. Welch were in
Multnomah countv for the Gresham
fair and saw the races.
"It was an experience that washed
away some or the cobweos placed by
the routine of daily life upon my spir
it, says Dr. Welch. 1 saw som
sights that played on my emotions as
nothing has in a lone time, ihey had
some good races and I was a mighty
eager watcher. But the cilmax of that
fair for me was the entrance, the day
the blue ribbon stock were led in
grand parade down in fiont of the
grandstand, of a team of young Mor
gan horses owned bv A. H. Harvey
There was pride in the very step of
those well-groomed colts. They were
beauties and they knew that they were
being watched. It must have done
the heart of Mr. Harvey good to see
the way tbey stenned. And what hap
pened demonstrated to me that human
beings haven't foreotten yet how to
pay their respect to eood horse flesh.
As Mr. Harvev drove un to the end
of the grandstand. the 5.000 people who
must have been there began a spon
taneous cheering, and most of them
swept to their feet in an ovation to
that beautiful team. Ihose colts
seemed to sense the thing. It was too
much for Mr. Harvev. I saw him take

away a tear. I am afraid my own eyes
dimmed a little.

LABOR DAY PICNIC
The big tourist hostelry will endeav
or to stimulate further visits of tour
ists next year. A new issue of 40.000
handsome booklets is being forwarded
to eastern railway and tourist agen
cies, ibe new booklets carry a hand
some drawing of the hotel on the front
cover, otherwise reference to the ho
tel is only by inference. The books
carry appealing cuts of the Columbia
Kiver Highway and are tilled with
graphic descriptions. A Routledge
topographic map gives the tourist a
comprehensive idea of the great high
way up the gorge.
It is always difficult for residents of
the middle west and east to understand
how climatic conditions in the North
west may vary radically over a few
miles' distance. It has been learned
this year that the people of Portland
think it always rains in Hood River if
it is raining there. I he Columbia
Gorge hotel is overcoming this misin
formation, and recent - incidents have
demonstrated to Portland folk that the
sun frequently shines with brilliancy
in the Hood River valley, althougl
showers may prevail ail the way up
the Columbia Kiver Highway to Cas
cade Locks. Portland's rainfall is just
a bout: twice as great as that of Hood
River and, too, according to oberva-
tions made by Amos Benson, who has
given the state's climatic conditions
considerable study latelv. a larger por
tion of the Hood River rainfall occurs
at night.
The Knieths of Pvthias Band will
have charge of a Hood River picnic at
Bonneville Labor Day when, it is an
ticipated, several hunderd local folk
will motor down over the Columbia
River Highway. The fun features
will be characterized by old fashioned
sports.
Commitees in charge of the affair
are headed by Bert Stranahan, L. S.
isenberg and J. C. Meyer.

ENGLISH EXPORT
MARKET IS ACTIVE
A. E. Wool pert states that he has
just received a communication from
Dan Wuille & Co. in London, who an
nounce a bright outlook for export ap
ples the coming season.
"Mr. Wuille writes me." says Mr.
Woolpert, "that the British Isles mar
kets are just now cleaning up on the
Tasmanian crop and that the fruit is
selling at an average of 20 shillings per
box. As exchange is at par for the
Tasmanian growers this means that
they are getting $4.86 per box.
The good prices for the Tasmania
fruit is indicative that we will have a
good demand for your apples,"
Hood River and Wasco counties have
launched a joint campaign for the
elimination of fire blight, nw attack
ing orchards of both counties. Hood
Kiver County Fruit Inspector Green
and C. L. Hazen and C. W. Daigh, re
spectively Wasco county fruit inspec
tor and agricultural agent, are collab
orating in plans for stamping out the
disease. Old . orchards on the range
between here and Mosier will be con
demned and pulled up.
lhe blight, the horticultural inspec
tors say, is spread by wind, and all
growers of both counties have been
asked to watch their orchard tracts
closely, in order to eliminate all trees
or branches Bhowing symptoms of
blight.
