Angus C. McDonald, who is with the
highway department of Sherman coun
ty, here with his family over the week
end to see hia mother, Mrs. Ellen Mc
Donald, brought the latest story of the
roads. Where some improvements are
being made on the Sherman county
road system, Mr. McDonald says, a
sign was placed as follows : "Detour
8 miles."
"1 was engaged on inspecting roads
the other morning," says Mr. McDon
ald, "when a Wasco county family, out
on their first motnr tour, and .heading
into central Oregon, hailed me. The
head of the family was irate. 'Where's
this town. Detour.' he said. "I've lived
in these parts 30 years and I never
heard of it before. We passed a sign
up the road that said it was eight miles
to it, but durned if we haven t traveled
15 miles already and haven't yet got
thar. "
The most comical incident of the re
cent Legion Mount flood Climb oc
curred here Saturday evening when a
prospective climber, upon spying Jim
Ileaton'a motor bus, which announces
a 15-rent fare to the Heights, boarded
the vehicle and road along with other
passengers to the business section at
the top of the canyon. He paid his 15
cents and then asked Mr. lieaton to di
rect Dim to the trail leading to the Le
gion ramp. He gave up his plnns for
a climb riirht then, when Mr. lieaton
explained that the Legion party was 26
miles away on Hood s side.
The visitor had heard that motor
buses would be operated at intervals to
the highland camp. He concluded that
the lieaton Heights bus was the ve
hicle be wanted.
