FRANZ CO on no FOR Berry, Cherry, Peach and Pear Boxes MADE TO ORDER AT THE GLACIER OFFICE, HOOD RIVER, OREGON VALLEY FRUIT CON DITIONS ARE FINE Follow ins a complete tour of the fruit area last week, C. II. Castner and II. F. Davidson declare that they have never seen the trees of the valley as a whole displayine better physical condition. "The foliage ia looking fine," said Mr. Castner, "and indications point to croD oi Brood aizea, ciean appies. While it is still early to make dehmie estimates, we anticipate that the Hood Kiver tonnage of commercially packed apples this year will reach 2,000 cars, or 1,600,000 boxes. This is an approx imate 75 per cent of the commercial tonnage of a year ago. Growers, how ever, are thinning their fruit well, and continuation of good growing weather may size the apples to the extent that the tonnage will be heavier than antic ipated. I his is the so-called on vear for the Hood River valley. Formerly trees bore heavily one year and the next year the fruit tonnage was extremely light. Mr. Castner, however, points out that fertilization, improved meth ods of cultivation, proper thinning and Irrigation has overcome the alternate bearing, and the crops of every year are now more nearly equalized. ihe market outlook so far is in definite. An East Side grower last week offered his entire crop for SI. 40. Another offered his crop, orchard run. for $1 per box. Neither offer was taken by buyers, who are waiting for the policy of the season to develop at the Seattle convention of the Inter national Apple Shippers Association in late July. Fine cars are left mere skeletons of a twisted chassis and every 'bit of wooden coach work becomes a pile of blackened cinders. The presence of gasoline tends to make a garage fire very complete in its destruction. .Make a memo now to teleplujtie 2804 R. E.
