DOCK OFFICIALS SEE
DAN WUILLE PLANT
John'H. Burgard, chairman of the
board of Portland Dock Commissioners,
and E. B. Hegardt, engineer of the
Dock Commission, were here last week
studying the ventilated storage quar
ters of Dan Wuille & Co., London
apple merchants, whose northwestern
headquarters are located here, and who
last season began the direct export of
apple from Portland to England in
huge quantities.
tbe Portland Dock Commission re
cently announced that it would provide
equipment for an approximate 300,000
boxes of apples on the wharves. A
visit of the two chief officers to the
local plant indicates that they antici
pate installation of ventilated storage
facilities similar to those found effi
cient by the London shippers.
HOWE HAS UNIQUE
MOTOR REPAIR SHOP
One of the uniauest automobile re
pair plants of the city is now operated
by Fred Howe, who has been engaged
in the business since the first cars
were'put into commission here over 15
years ago. Mr. Howe, has secured the
large paint shop on Columbia street,
formerly occupied by J. B. Hunt.
Here he operates his lathe and other
machinery with a ford motor and over
head shafting. The motor runs a
'breaker-in" machine for testing out
newly ground cylinders.
Mr. Howe's place of business is
large and airy. It is equipped- with
tha latest tools and appliances of all
kinds. The pioneer automobile man is
kept busy in the repair and remedying
of motor troubles.

Reduction of freight rates on straw
berries from here to Yakima, Wash.,
resulted last Thursday night in the
shipment of a carload of field pick
strawberries to the Libby. McNeil &
Libby cannery there. The Dalles plant
of tbe Libby concern, which contracted
all of the culls and held picks of the
Apple Growers Association this year
was overstocked because of the height
of harvest season, and but for plana of
shipments to the new Yakima plant,
some of the berries might have been
lost The reduced rate is 30 cents per
100 pounds, with a minimum of 20,000
pounds.
The lower freight charge win proD-
ably result in tbe shipment of local
and Mosier cherries to xakima.

assistant to Mr. Clark the vast year,
has been named sales manager of the
soft fruits department of the Oregon

He will leave for Salem this week to
make his home. Mr. McNary, a great
war veteran, is a graduate of tbe Uni

Mr. Caroes Writes From California
"Standish, Calif., June 18, 1922.
Editor Glacier: We, like you, have
had a very late spring scarcely any
growing weather. The last -few days
have been warming up, and the grain
is growing very rapidly. Alfalfa har
vest is just beginning. Help is very
hard to get no idle men in the valley
The Redwood Lumber Co., at West
wood, is running 600 men short They
cannot run the night shift because of
scarcity of help. The crop prospects
are for a good crop throughout our
valley.
Our most nattering crop prospects
consists of about 300 young turkeys.
Out of a hatch of some 300. we lost
only six young turkeys, and they were
tramped to death by the mother bens
We are not bothered with any poultry
diseases. Our only pests are the mites
and that can be overcome very readily
by proper spraying of nesting places,
coops and yards, also by greasing the
young pullets. It s a sight to see all
this nock of turkeys coming up lor
their daily feeds; nearly as interesting
as watching the apples grow.
