XS&Kf aid GOOD 100 PURE FRESH DAILY AT YOUR GROCERS Pretentious plana for the direct water export of Northwestern apples were announced last week by n. f . Davidson, who for the past year has been devoting the larger share of bis time to reestablishing the Oregon can nine Co. Mr. Davidson, one of the first Northwestern bddIu shippers, hay ing entered the eame whe Hood River was entering the commercial apple field, and who was president oi tbe North Pacific Fruit Ditsributors, later opening an export office of his own in New xork tJity, associated wun j. m. Ferguson, of Yakima, and Edwin Smith, of Wenatchee. has formed tbe Fruit Exports Corporation. Mr. Dav idson will be president or the new organization and will have offices in Portland. Mr. Ferguson, who will ODen a Seattle office, will have a branch in Yakima. Mr. Davidson's interests will operate a local branch. Tbe Wenatchee branch will be in charge of Mr. Smith, who for several years has headed the Wenatchee Traffic Association. Tbe organizers, all experienced in the export of apples, Mr. Ferguson having been sbiDDing to England from the big Washington district for tbe past 10 years, expect to handle export ooxea apples in diocks oi eucn size that they will be able to secure a better freight rate than has prevailed in the past. our heavy shipments, saia Mr. Davidson, "will induce shipping inter ests to lower rates, which heretofore have been too high. Furthermore we will open a London office. We have several men under consideration. Our manager there will be a man who is already established in the British Isles trade and who knows tbe methods of distribution abroad. We expect to handle the apples in Quantities that will enable us to eliminate many ex penses that have heretofore character lzed export shipments. Formerly ex ports have been largely handled by Atlantic Coast marketers, who have shipped for the most part in small lots. Our plans call for a stabilization of the distribution on a basis in compar ison witb tbe heavy distribution made through domestic markets every year, We believe that our plans will work toward an economy for the Northwest ern export tonnage, which as every one versed in conditions knows, reaches a considerable percentage of our crop, The company will unify foreign mar ketmg facilities and bring about a better coordination of shipments from the various sections of the Northwest to European markets. A more intel ligent distribution will result, and con sequently market conditions will be healthier and more stable." Tbe new organization, Mr. Davidson says, has resulted from deliberation of more than a year. The local grower and shipper has made several trips abroad studying apple market condi tions. Mr. Smith was in Europe Ijast summer. Mr. Ferguson will leave soon for England to establish the Lon don office. It is anticipated that the activities of the newly launched concern, which is incorporated under the laws of Washington, will be a feature of the International Apple bhippers Associa tion at Seattle in July. Mr. Davidson states that the company is expecting a minimum of 600 earloads of export apples from the Northwestern districts the coming fall. It will operate in all principal shipping communities of the two states. The Dee Dlant of the Oregon Lum ber Co.. which has been delayed this year because of damage to a logging road last November during the heavy sleet storm, will start the season a run Monday. The concern will employ about 175 men in the plant and the log ging camps on the Upper West Fork of Hood river. Heavy snowdrifts are still encoun tered in the highland fir forests, where the logging camp is located. The lum ber tract being logged is in the Ore gon National forest, me stumpage of the area was purchased by the lum ber concern several years ago, the deal having been the largest involving Douglas fir, ever closed by tbe fores try service. Charles Batchelde'r Going to Europe Mr. and Mrs. J. F. Batchelder have just received a message from their son. Charles Batchelder. vice president of the United Financial Corporation, of Montreal, Canada, announcing that be has recovered from serious injuries sustained recently during a windstorm. En route to his office Mr. tsatcneiaer was struck by a telephone pole felled by the wind. The impact of the fall ing pole was broken by cross arms, which undoubtedly saved Mr. Batchel- der's life. Mr. Batchelder was in charge of the Canadian financial institution while us president. Sir Charles Gordon, was at tending the Genoa conference. In his latest letter, Mr. Batchelder states that he will leave soon on an European trip. He will join Sir Charles Gordon at i he Hague and observe the confer ence to be held there. Why Suffer From Rheumatism I Do you know that nine out of every ten cases of rheumatism are simply rheumatism of the muscles or chronic rheuamtism, neither of which require any internal treatment; The pain may be relieved by applying Chamberlain's Liniment, which makes sleep and rest possible, and that certainly means a great deal to any one afflicted with rheumatism. WOODMEN CEREMONY AT THE DALLES A large number of Hood River Wood men or the world motored to ihe Dalles Saturday night to participate in one oi trie largest ceremonials ever held by Woodmen in this section of the state. Members ' of eight different camps were present for the pleasant event. Uver 300 were present. The Dalles K. of P. band led the big parade on Second street, which was conducted by E. P. Martin, deputy head council of this district F. W. heard, district manager, and the members of Multnomah Camp, No. 77, and its degree team, surprised The Dalles camp when they unexpectedly arrived in the city. Tbe Multnomah camp team gave an exhibition drilling on becond street, after which the dele gation asesmbled in the Odd Fellows hall for the initiation of 53 new mem bers. Dr. O. D. DoMne gave the welcoming speech and M. D. George, of the Mult nomah camp, made the response. The officers and team of the Mount Hood camp conferred dereeson 53 candidates. A delicious dinner was Served at tbe close of the evening's activities. JAPANESE LEASE PRA- TIIER SUMMIT PLACE Nakamura Bros.. Japanese ranch ers, who have leased the 60-acre Hood river bottom farm of Geo. T. Prather, in the Summit district, will enter truck gardening on a large scale the coming year. A large portion of the farm will be devoted to asparagus growing. Heavy piantingflol tomatoes will be grown. Ihe Japanese, too, may crow large quantities of celery, a crop to which the local soil, it is de clared, is especially adapted. formerly the duik oi toe truck pror duce of this district has been produced on Columbia lowlands. Floods of the past several years, however, have been the source of considerable loss and ir regularities in cultivations. Because of the destruction of last year's Co lumbia flood, many Japanese and white ranchers have planted a considerable acre are of tomatoes on the highland soil tbis season, and tbe tomato ton nage cf tbe valley this season will probably eclipse that of any former year. Goose Shortage Acute The shortage of houses here has reached a stage that is seriously acute. During tbe past week at least a dozen families have sought in vain for living quarters. A number of orchardists. kasirg their places to move to the city have leen unable to secure accommo dations. Construction work on the new f l,2o0,0tK) dam of the Pacific Pow er Light Co. has called the families of a number of enginers here. These report an inability to find living quarters. A demand has been evidenced here each summer season for small furnish ed cottages by Portland families who express a desire to spend the cummer months in the city. This class of tem porary residents will be eliminated this season. A large number of small res idences.Tiowever, are being built in the city for the occupancy of builders. Own a home.
