MRS. BYERLEE TELLS VETERAN'S INSURANCE
OF AFRICAN DANDY DRIVE UNDER WAY
"I wish you could have seen the
sight we saw this morning," writes
Mr. David Byerlee, from Bolenge,
Congo Beige, to her sister-in-law, Mrs.
Susie Lynn. Mrs. Byerlee and her
husband are now in the central Afri
can region as missionaries. Her letter
continues :
'A native rikum, sort of chief of
Tanlac For His. Com-lBion w"tn favorite wife. He was
dressed principally in animal skins. A
DiacK 1 monkey skin lormed a canerine
for his shoulders. Strips of monkey
and leopard skins dangled from his
waist, forming a short skirt. Skins
were also used to make him a tall
cone-shaped hat, which was further
decorated with ear flaps made of skins
with the fur side in. . They were cov
ered with small pearl buttons, sewed
on in rows. A large brass pie pan
formed a decoration for his breast.
His body was covered with native red
paint, and he appeared like a red man
instead of a black. Native white paint
was used to make rings about his eyes
and stripes down each arm. . His arms
and legs were adorned with numerous
bracelets and anklets. : He carried a
knife and wore a concealed bell that
tinkled as he walked.
"His wife was a very pretty young
woman. Her body, beautifully formed,
was covered with this red paint. . Her
hair had been combed to form; a big
were arranged in the back. All was
plastered thick with- the red paint.
She wore only a long string of small
brass beads draped : across her chest
and under her arma and back to the
front, where they were concealed in
her wide leopard skin girdle and loin
cloth. Strips of leopard, skin hung
down to her ankles in front and behind
like tails. She moved with a grace
acquired from muscular dances prac
ticed by these people from childhood.
They would have liked for us to, take
their - pictures, but a drizzle of a rain
prevented.
"The couple came from the back
country where, things are much wilder
than here along the river. I was told
she was an aunt of one of my orphan
girls."
i Perpetual summer reigns where Mr.
and Mrs. Byerlee are stationed. . Mrs.
Byerlee'a letter told of the recent re
ceipt of a package of supplies from
the States. The sender enclosed a
note stating that the thermometer reg
istered 20 degrees below zero and the
snow was two feet deep, at the time
the articles were prepared. The tem
perature was 94 degrees in the shade
when Mr. Byerlee unpacked the box.

The Home of the Soul
In olden times, it was believed that
the seat or the soul was the stomach,

You Are Choosing Today
between spending a little for paint now
or spending heavily for repairs later
YOU can't escape the choice.
Either your buildings are
well protected by paint or they
are rotting and will require re
pairing or rebuilding within a
lew years.
Check the costs. Find out how
much more it will cost to repair
or rebuild your property than it
will to protect it with paint. Rot
ting buildings are a waste and an
extravagance. .
When you paint use the beat
paint. It costs less in the long
run. , It spreads more easily
saves labor cost. It covers more
surface per gallon than "cheap"
paint.
But most important, the best paint
serves you five or more years longer
than "cheap" paint. .
