has had a very successful year.
Eighteen new members have been
added.
The philanthropic committee, Mrs.
Munroe stated, has responded to every
local call and has dispatched supplies
to the Albertina Kerr Nursery, of
Portland. The welfare committee has
collaborated with the philanthropic
committee in caring for needy children
and unprotected girls.
Mrs. Munroe stated that one of the
most brilliant events of the club's pro

the Columbia Gorge Hotel to further
its health deDartment.- Two hundred
women of the valley were in attendance.
The civic committee had charge of
the citv'a clean ud week which was

Much Construction Under Way
While no large construction work is
under way in the city or valley tbis
summer, the aggregate of many small
new homes, apple houses, alteration
and remodeling jobs will keep local
contractors, carpenters and the dis
trict's skilled labor busy for the sea
son. Twelve small new homes and ap
pie bouses are now under way in the
city and different parts or the vsiiey.
The Park Grange, the membership
of which is the largest of the state,
has projected construction of a new
hall on the West Side, having pur
chased a wooded site near Rock ford
store. Many orrhardists are'eonttract
ing bams or apple packing plants.
Lost Lake Work Begun
W. A. Langille has established a
camp near the D. I. Stone ranch place
on the Upper West Fork and is making
preparations for cutting a new grade
of the Lost Lake Highway between
the bounds of tbe Oregon National
Forest and Dee. Tbe coonty has
agreed to match $4,000 of funds made
available by the United States For
estry Service. The work on the new
grade will begin tbis week, when 20
men will be at work.
Freight Rate Cut
The Commercial Club has been noti
fied by the Public Service Commission
of a reduction on the freight rate of
forest products, including lumber box
and crate shock. frm Bend to Hood
Kiver. The new tariff of the O.-W.
R. & N. line will be effective, accord
ing to the notice of the commission, on
June 19. A new commodity rate on
shocks is established, and the rate on
lumber is lowered approximately 3)
cents per 100 pounds.
Tbe Home of the Sonl
In olden times, it was believed that
the seat of the soel was tbe stomach,
most likely for the reason that a man
is never so completely used cp as when
his stomach is oat of order. For tbe
ci re of ordinary stomach troubles,
tr.ere is nothirg quite so rrorrpt and
satisfactory as Qtamberlain's Tstlets.
