BOYS' CHORUS TO SING HERE SOON The Boys' Chorus of the Pilgrim Congregational church,, of Portland, who plan on coming here to participate in the strawberry harvest or the val ley, will give a concert at the Rialto or Liberty theatre in mid-June. The musical organization, which has won fame for its songs in and around Port land, will sing for the benefit of the fund of the recreational committee of tbe Riverside Community church. This organization last summer won state wide prominence for its work in devel oping a boys' camp on the place of Leslie Butler south of the city. A club house was built and a swimming pool constructed. Mr. Butler donated the use of a ! wooded acreage for the "he boys' recreational and Boy Scout work, it is announced, will be resumed this summer in charge of Floyd Wrieht, of Whitman College, where be bad training in handling boys. WOMAN'S CLUB NEWS Officers of the Woman's Club were installed for the ensuing year Wednes day of last week as follows : Mrs. J. i;, rerguson, presiaem.; jmkb ijr Davidson, first vice president; Mrs. F. A. Olmsted, second vice president ; Mrs. H. G. Ball, recording secretary ; Mrs. E. O. Blanchar, corresponding secretary, and Mrs. W. H. Chipping, Mrs. Ferguson has been a leader in Oregon club women's circles for many years. She was formerly president of the Astoria Woman's Club. The reoort of the retiring president of the Woman's Club, Mrs. William Munroe, shows that the organization has had a very successful year. Eighteen new members have been added. The philanthropic committee, Mrs. Munroe stated, has responded to every local call and has dispatched supplies to the Albertina Kerr Nursery, of Portland. The welfare committee has collaborated with the philanthropic committee in caring for needy children and unprotected girls. Mrs. Munroe stated that one of the most brilliant events of the club's pro gram the past year was a luncheon at the Columbia Gorge Hotel to further its health deDartment.- Two hundred women of the valley were in attendance. The civic committee had charge of the citv'a clean ud week which was very effective. The scholarship loan committee raised $144 from an amateur theatrical performance. The home economics committee presented the domestic science department of the bieh school and an exhibit of their work. Tbe music department has been active throughout the year. Much Construction Under Way While no large construction work is under way in the city or valley tbis summer, the aggregate of many small new homes, apple houses, alteration and remodeling jobs will keep local contractors, carpenters and the dis trict's skilled labor busy for the sea son. Twelve small new homes and ap pie bouses are now under way in the city and different parts or the vsiiey. The Park Grange, the membership of which is the largest of the state, has projected construction of a new hall on the West Side, having pur chased a wooded site near Rock ford store. Many orrhardists are'eonttract ing bams or apple packing plants. Lost Lake Work Begun W. A. Langille has established a camp near the D. I. Stone ranch place on the Upper West Fork and is making preparations for cutting a new grade of the Lost Lake Highway between the bounds of tbe Oregon National Forest and Dee. Tbe coonty has agreed to match $4,000 of funds made available by the United States For estry Service. The work on the new grade will begin tbis week, when 20 men will be at work. Freight Rate Cut The Commercial Club has been noti fied by the Public Service Commission of a reduction on the freight rate of forest products, including lumber box and crate shock. frm Bend to Hood Kiver. The new tariff of the O.-W. R. & N. line will be effective, accord ing to the notice of the commission, on June 19. A new commodity rate on shocks is established, and the rate on lumber is lowered approximately 3) cents per 100 pounds.
