MOTOR TRUCK DRIVER
MET INTERRUPTION
Georce Franklin, drivinz a motor
truck from Bend to Portland, declared
that he had been making a prorejrres
sive study of the state a traffic laws
and that he thought he had a pretty
thorough understanding of them. The
truck, owned by a Portland automobile
concern, ten vena, tne driver armea
with a permit from Sheriff Roberts
privileging Mr. Franklin to pilot it
without any license plates. At Mad
ras the sheriff of Jefferson county bait
ed him, refusing to recognize the per
mit of his fellow officer. But the Jeff
erson county sheriff instructed Mr.
Franklin to have the owners forward
him a set of dealers' license plates.
"I secured these," said. Mr. Frank
lin, "and bv telephone secured permis
sion from the office of Secretary of
State Kozer to place a load of trunks
and household goods on the truck."
At Hood Kiver last week the truck
was halted by Traffic umcer vernon
Murray, who cited that the traffic law
will not permit a dealers' license plate
I to be utilized on a car '.being put to
commercial purposes. Mr. Franklin
was held here until he could secure
funds for purchasing a regulation com
mercial truck license.

LARAWAY SAYS
CONVENTION SUCCESS
W. F. Laraway, who with Mrs. Lar
away, returned last week from a motor
trip to Eugene, where he attended the
annual convention of the Oregon Jew
ellers' Association, declares that roads
down the Williamette valley are in
excellent condition.
"The journey," says Mr. Laraway,
"was a very pleasant one, and we
made the trip both ways without any
inconvenience. The springtime drive
is one of great delights. The conven
tion was a very successful one, and a
number of enthusiastic discussions
were participated in. Jewellers in all
parts of the state, talking the matter
over harmoniously, decided that jewel
ry prices should be made to conform to
the trend of the times."
OPEN AIR STAGE
TO BE IMPROVED
At a meeting of the Chautauqua
committee last week, it was decided to
utilize a surplus in the treasury for
making improvements to the stage of
the open air auditorium on Chautauqua
park. The remainder of funds will be
turned over to the city to be utilized
in landscaping the park.
The Chautauqua this year will Degm
on June 30 and last for six days. The
committee is urging residents of the
valley to utilize the park around the
open air theatre for social reunions
and picnic lunches. It is also cited
that the city automobile camping park
is but a short distance away, and rural
residents whose homes are at a dis
tance are asked to camp in the city
during progress of the Chautauqua.
Milk Drinks Tax Free
Internal Revenue Collector Huntley
has iuat received a ruling from Wash
ington to the effect that the tax of two
cents a gallon on still drinks does not
apply to milk shakes or malted milks.
Proprietors of soda fountains have
heretofore been instructed to keep a
record of each glass of milk shakes and
malted milks sold by them and pay i
tax of two cents per gallon thereon
This latest ruling, which is based upon
the theory that drinks mane or milk
are articles of food, will relieve soda
fountain operators from the necessity
of keeuinar a record of such sales.
The tax of two cents a gallon applies
to lemonades, orangeade, fruit punches
and other similar drinks mixed or pre
pared with still water as distinguished
from carbonated water, and dealers
must keep a record of each glass sold
and pay two cents a gallon thereon.

Astoria Port Men Report
Returning from a tour of inspection
and investigation up the Columbia riv
er as far as The Dalles, R. D. Pinneo,
traffic manager, and R. R. Bartlett,
port manager, of the Port of Astoria
declared that conditions were most
favorable to the juration of a river
steamboat line from The Dalles to
Astoria for the purpose of affording
the wheat growers of the Snake river
basin relief from the differential laid
againstt heir shipments to Astoria.
lhe port officials visited all points
along the river and made definite ar
rangements for vessels to go into the
service as soon as the new crop of
wheat becomes available for shipment.
They found adequate landing facilities
and secured rates on the'steamboata
which, it is declared, will not only be
cheaper than the present rail rates to
tide water, but below those now exist
ing to any port from whence grain can
be shipped on ocean going vessels.

City Marshal William Hart warns all
citizens owning dogs that the season's
license fee 13 for males and $5 for
females, is now due. Owner are ad
vised to visit the city hall and pay the
license fees to avoid impounding of
dogs.
